I heard Illinois is banning smoking in public spaces. Does anyone know if this just means enclosed public spaces? I'm assuming its still ok to smoke outside?

Hard to say, as the laws do vary, so what may fly is CA may not in IL

They just had the report on Fox here in the Chicagoland.

Essentially, smoking is banned in all indoor public places. The exceptions they mentioned were smoke shops, designated smoking room in hotels, your home, your car, and outdoors (I think they said that you have to be greater than 15 feet away from the enterance to a place where smoking is banned).

Personally, I could care less if they ban smoking indoors. I don't smoke anymore, but the way these anti-smokers are carrying on about 2nd hand smoke, I'm sure it will only be time until smoking is banned outdoors.

I never understood the 2nd hand smoke arguement outdoors. Which would a person rather sit in an enclosed area with for 1 hour, an automobile or a smoker? Yet no one thinks twice about driving their car.

Heres a short article on it on the Fox News Chicago website:

I know of some other states that have banned smoking within 25 feet of a entrance to a business establishment. However the law is really not that enforced, especially at bars. Every time I drive by one, I see a lot of people outside the door, not 25 feet away from the entrance to the building, smoking and some of them have a alcoholic drink in there hand as well.

No, it's not ok to smoke outside a smoke-free establishment unless they specifically say it is; don't assume anything. I've seen people get busted for this numerous times. Trust Illinois to have the crazy rules- it's also the only state that requires school P.E. classes...

Depends upon how they wrote the law. Here in California you can smoke outside in some public venues and not in others as local ordinances often add stricter penalties to the presiding state law.

in other states, that also generally includes entryways into buildings as well; smokers usually have to go around the corner. It depends on how your state's legislation is worded.

I was initially against these measures on a civil-libertarian basis, but now that we've gotten used to smoke-free places, smokey places are more noticeably irritating.

That would mean a certain amount of feet from the place is also non smoking.
