why do men continue to wear ties to work in most office jobs?

I know about dress codes but don't you think ties should be banished altogether. They must be awfully uncormfortable. Really, what's the point?

Same reason women wear makeup and high heels, and get lower salaries for the same work men do...old habits are hard to break.

Its competitive ... all sociologists will tell you that better looking people (on average) progress faster.

A tie, so the theory goes, makes you look better, more professional, etc. Therefore, if you think there is somebody else competing for the same job that is equally talented, you'll wear a tie to get the edge.

The more relaxed about what you are doing and where you are going, the less likely you are to wear a tie.

Indeed in my line of work a tie can actually work against you. That is, the sales and marketing people who know nothing about engineering all wear ties. If you want an engineer, look for the dude in jeans.

For the same reason men used to wear spats. It was a sign of being well dressed and suitable to be seen with in upscale company.

From your question it's fairly obvious that you don't own a tie, have never worn one and have absolutely no idea how to tie one. Done properly, they are not uncomfortable at all. Perhaps you would prefer all men to go to work, regardless of their employment, dressed in trackies, trainers and a hoody? That would be really impressive in a bank or a solicitors' office wouldn't it?
