I was worried about the asker, until I read the 46 or 50 state guy. Dude, there are 50 states get a clue.
Thanks Elizabeth for your great answer. To add on a bit, territories have subdivisions or classifications, they can be either incorporated or unincorporated, organized or unorganized, lastly some have commonwealth status. The wiki for USA territories will give great detail on this.

Just 50, waiting to see if this is some sort of trick question.
ADD ON Stephen W. is all wrong. The examples he gives are states as they were admitted to the Union by act of Congress, after their legislatures voted to become states. While Massachusetts may be named the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, it is indeed a state. The official name of the state just happens to have the word commonwealth in it. Take the state we commonly call Rhode Island for an example, the official name of that state is Rhode Island and Providence Plantation.
