With the divorce rate so high between opposite sex marriages why would it matter?

i think it distresses people to think that their views are not seen as the absolute truth. Legalizing same sex marriage (or domestic partnership, whatever) would make it impossible for them to see the truth. It would mean that they had to realize that they really don't have the right o impose their moral or religious structure on everyone else. Mouthing the words "all men are created equal" and being made to practice them are two very different things, after all.

Because they are so insecure in their own beliefs that anyone doing anything different is seen as a challenge. If two men are allowed to marry, then why should the closeted gay right-winger remain married to his oblivious wife? If they have to be miserable with the choices they made to follow societal constructs, how dare anyone think they can do anything differently!

Because some people want special rights. They want the special right to discriminate against others and they want special rights based on their sexual behavior. Because they choose to go to bed with people of the opposite sex, they think they should have the special right to marry. I don't believe in special rights for anyone, I believe in equal rights.

The real reason is control. Political and moral control makes some people (normally so-called Christians, who apparently haven't read the New Testament - you know the message of Christ bit) feel superior. Then they don't have to deal with how sad and lonely they really feel.

There are several but basically they all stem from fear, prejudice and ignorance. And these are taught; either by parents, siblings, friends and even sometimes by religion.
