I gotta say - these answers don't seem to explain the area.
The Heights is a mix of grand Victorian homes, dilapidated cottages, and an ever increasing number of modern townhomes jam-packed into small lots.
Demographics run from both ends of the spectrum. The public schools are considered risky.
Lot values in the Heights have risen to about $100K. This makes most of the small houses more attractive as tear-downs. Increasing the risk some knuckle-head will build an oversize townhome next to you.
If you want "eclectic", the Heights might be a good choice for you. If that term does not appeal to you, you might want to look elsewhere.
Also note, old Houston was mostly downtown and, as a result, was mostly paved over. The Heights is one of the few neighborhood left that will give you a sense what Houston was like at the turn of the century.

Very nice luxury homes. Very expensive but a great location. The Heights and River Oaks area are some of the nicest spots expecially if you work close to the Galleria or downtown Houston.

The Heights is located close to downtown and considered a good neighborhood. Don't count on the public schools.
I love Memorial. All of the good areas cost a lot unless you move out to Katy or south to Clear Lake.

I live in the Heights and it's very nice. Kinda pricey to buy there right now. Big family style houses but there are apartments and garage apartments too if you go look for them. You can expect to pay around 500 for a garage apt and upwards for a one bedroom apt unless you want to live in one of the slightly less nice neighborhoods.
There's lots of great places to live in Houston depending on what your budget is.

The Heights?
Old and rickety, in my opinion.
The poster who said it was a mix of Victorian mansions and little rundown cottages pretty much nailed it.
I'm sure the Heights was quite a place during it's heyday, which was about 80 years ago, but now?

I think that area is over priced .You may consider Pearland area and get almost twice for the money. It is easy access to the freeways. The homes there are fairly new also.
