Because they don't know what the definition of a vegetarian is.

I think it's because they consider themselves a demi-vegetarian. It is a term used to describe a person who eats fish, but not meat. Some self-styled 'demi-veggies' may eat poultry and avoid only red meat.

The invented terms pesco-vegetarian and pescatarian are increasingly common, and clearer in meaning. The most pratical option is usually to state a person's eating preferences in an explicit phrase.

I wonder what the term would be for people who eat veggies, meat, fish, (but no shell or bottom feeders) and no pork?

Everybody has given themselves some kind of name for something. Me? I eat it all...well except organ meat, hunted meat (rabbit, possum, deer), squid, crabs, oysters, mountain oysters, pig intestines (chittlins or 'chiterlings), pig ears, feet, nose, cow's tongue....I could go on, but I think you get the jest....smile

Well, first off, fish isn't meat. : P Secondly, I suppose because people have tendencies to be very hypocritical. Sometimes we like to say we do things that we actually don't just to be "cool" or maybe popular with something.

Other than that, whoever is saying that is wasting your and their time. Since obviously they eat meat, they are not a veggi.

Some people are vegetarians for health reasons, not because they want to "save the animals" Those type usually eat chicken and fish, just leave out red meat, and substitute the nutrients they would get from red meat.

My friend says he is a veggi but eats chicken... he simply says it's easier to say he is a veggi than list all the things he doesn't eat...but he does admit he isn't a proper veggi

Maybe they are one of those veggies that eat fish and chicken but never eat beef.

Because they are dumb and don't understand the term... It would be much more accurate to just say, "I don't eat mammals...)

Then again, Catholics have long clouded the concept of "what is meat." During lent, a good Catholic does not eat meat on Fridays, but fish is OK. According to dictionary.com, the term "meat" is defined firstly as the flesh of animals as used for food....

Some vegetarians have skewed the meaning of vegetarianism. I know I consider myself to be one for the MOST part, but I eat seafood, aside from octopus.
A true vegetarian eats no animal flesh.

That is a good question I have wondered that one for many years. I think they want to be a veggie but then miss certain things and break their promise.
