Hi everyone, I'm wondering when exactly I should go to the hospital when I'm ready to have the baby. I know that I need to go right away if my water breaks to avoid infection, but if it doesn't break and there's only contractions when should I go? It's my first pregancy and was told that there's a window of time I need to make it to the hospital by in order to get an epidural. I'm not sure if I'm gonna get one for sure, but I do want the option. I'm only 5 mins from hospital.

It's hard to say because it's your first baby and no one knows how rapid your'e labor will be. If I could answer your question and somehow help you out,I would suggest you would be in labor if your contractions are of a regular pattern (even if they are 10-20 minutes apart-consecutive for a couple hours) When they become 8-10 minutes apart for 1 hour, I would call your Doctor and he/she will give you instructions.Depending how much pain you are in, they will make a determination.Usually by the sound of your voice while you are having a contraction will help them determine how much pain you are in.Also your contractions may radiate from the back and to the front they also become longer and stronger .Other signs of labor may be nausea, pelvic pain/ pressure, menstrual like cramping;you may or may not lose your mucous plug(thick glob jellylike substance may be blood tinged.) Bloody/pink show.of course the rupture odf membranes. If you want more info visit WebMd,it's a helpful site, tells you everything you need to know. Good luck!!!!!

Here's my thing:
I went with my son when they were 5 minutes apart and steady as well as really painful. I was only 2 cm. dilated. They let me stay because it was active labor. It was a 28 hour labor.

My daughter- I waited until I was 3 minutes apart and then called the doctor who told me to go right in. I live 20 mintues from the hospital and was I was 5 cm. dilated and then got there. I had an epidural at 6 cm...

Make sure you can time your contractions for an hour before calling- and then give them the length of time between contractions and how long they actually last.

So...call your doctor when your contractions are 5 minutes apart and they will tell you what to do from there.

Good luck to you- I can hear how nervous you are- but you are going to be fine!

Take good care of you and baby!

When your contractions are either 3-5 minutes apart (since you are so close I would go closer to 3), if they suddenly go from being 10 in. apart to 5 min apart and intense (might be a quick, hard labor), or if they get so intense you can't stand it.
I totally understand wanting to get there in time for an epidural (I had 1 with each kid), but you don't want to get there too early and have to wait a long time or get sent home. Plus it is much more pleasant to labor in the comfort of your own home, in your clothes than in a cold, bright hospital room in an ugly blue polka dot gown. Good luck!

Hello! Well I am forty one weeks pregnant and feature been at Blanchfield clinic in Fort campbell, K.Y. (navy) and I have had not anything however unhealthy studies up to now. I have not obvious a truly general practitioner but and it is been another mid spouse at any time when. Your dealt with like a quantity as an alternative then a character. When I attempted discussing my beginning plan with the final mid spouse she stated there was once no factor in me speakme to her approximately it intent she would not be there for my supply besides. I take a seat within the ready room for no less than 30 min after my appointment time at any time when and each one that works there's simply impolite. If I might see a civilian general practitioner I could however given my insurance plan I'm no longer allowed. I'm no longer looking to scare you however all my revel in had been bad. I have alot of peers who've had those sort of problems with this unique clinic so I are not able to say it is all navy however I could keep on with civilian care. Anyway I wish this is helping a little bit as an alternative then sounding like a venting consultation. Good good fortune with the whole lot!!

You should ask your doctor about this.

However, I was told in my childbirthing class to go when the contractions were five minutes apart, for an hour. Had we done that, she would have been born at home so trust your instincts!

You are generally told to go in if your water has broken, however the hospital is not going to prevent infection. In fact, their repeated checks and such are more likely to INTRODUCE infection.

Just call your doctor when you think the time is right and s/he will guide you.

well if you are 41 weeks you might not get the chance to know. Its sounds like you will probably have to be induced. But trust me you will know because when that first contraction comes-that bad baby is going to hurt. As soon as you start having contractions that are 5 minutes apart-go to the hosp. But most the time at 41 weeks preggo they are going to keep you in that hospital after your first contraction.

Just want to add to all your good answers, that you should ask your doctor when he/she wants to be notified. I think a lot of doctors like to be called a while before you actually go to the hospital (like when they're 10-15 minutes apart) so they can have time to make adjustments in their schedules and get to the delivery room on time for you too!

Go when your contractions are about five minutes apart. This will give them plenty of time to admit you and give you the epidural. But if your water breaks first, or you can feel it "leaking" go immediately.

Well call your O.B when you start contracting 15 minutes apart. If your breaks then call your O.B. They will direct you from there. IF it is time to go to the hospital they will call ahead of time for you a room. Always call your O.B first. Good Luck.
