I am going to bring the pipe to the shop and they are going to charge the rate of 80/hr. to install it. Is this the going rate for an independant shop. It is really close to what the dealers now get.

Shop labor rates vary wildly depending on location but this is also an extremely competitive industry. All shops within a given geographic area will generally be within a few dollars of each other.

You can ask different shops base on by job cost, not by hourly cost.

Bring the pipe and tell them what you want done and ask them to give your a price quote.

Ask around a few times, and you will find an approximate price of how much it would cost and choose the best shop.

If every consumer do compare shopping, we would not have this kind of muffler shop that charges $80/hr and get away with it, unless there is only one muffler shop in your 50 mile radius, then monopoly comes into the picture and you have no choice.

Good Luck.

I have talked with a shop in my area, (south central Wisconsin)
and they were more than willing for me to hang my system and weld it up for me. They can order any system, but at increased prices.... I can get what I want much cheaper....
They also quoted me 80.00/HR and for only having to weld it together, it would be 80.00 w/tax.

So I would guess that 80.00 is an average.

It most liekly is the rate. Sounds a little steep to me, but not out of line. Buy the muffler clamps and put it on yourself, or get a buddy that works on cars to do it and give him $50. good luck.
