Is the tank at the right temperature (77 degrees)? Do you have a filter? Did you research the fish at all?

If the tank has not been set up and running with the filter for at least a month odds are very good it's an ammonia problem. You can buy a test kit to test the ammonia levels yourself or take a water sample to the pet store and have them test it for you. A test kit is available at any pet store and is quite cheap, just be sure to get a kit with liquid drops, not test strips.

You don't say how long after you got the fish that they died and that would be a good clue to the cause as well.

There is the long outside chance you are getting sick fish, but I would say odds are better that it's ammonia. One good idea is to ask a shop to give the fish a little food before you buy them and never buy a fish that will not eat in the store. That also lets you fine out what the store is feeding them so you can offer the same or a similar food once you get the fish home.

I suggest you get an ammonia test kit, test the tank and change enough water to lower the ammonia to a safe level before you even consider adding more fish. I'll give you a link that explains the ammonia in the tank and how it starts what is called the nitrogen cycle. Read up on it and you will understand whats going on in the tank and why it's killing your fish. If you have any questions after you read this link feel free to email me.

Hope that helps

When fish swim at the top and then die, it is a sign of ammonia poisoning. You should test for ammonia, and if it is high, use a siphon to clean the dirt from the gravel. You will want to take out about 1/2 the tanks water because of the high level of ammonia. Replace with dechlorinated water, and cut way back on the amount of food given. Your fish will not starve to death. Any time your fish start to die you should do a water test to find out why. If your water comes back fine, then you should look for other causes like disease.

what tank size, filter?

how long has the tank been set up? is it cycling?

chances are that your watr parameters arent correct.

The thing is, when you start losing alot of fish, you never buy more so soon, thats only adding to the problem and prehaps creating a new one.

Try some aquarium salt, and allow the tank to settle. Their isnt anything else.
