I heard that guinea pigs live longer if they have cage mates. I just got a new mini rex bunny and I've had my satin guinea pig shadow for about two years now! He's almost two and a half. I have had mini rex rabbits before and shadow loved her. They were never in the same cage but they loved to play and after koko died shadow seemed to get depressed. When my new bunny and shadow play the bunny tries to chew on shadows ears and fur but not in a harmful way. I wanted to get a really big cage and house them both in it, but I don't know how they will react and can they eat each others food and not get sick? I just wondered if this was a good idea and if you recommend it because I really want shadow to have a buddy! Shadow and Hala-Kahiki are both male, plzz help! Thanx!

That's great for them! As long as they're happy together, why not. When it comes to feeding, Guinea Pigs can eat high quality rabbit pellets but they will need some additional Vitamin C like bell peppers, tomatoes, or oranges and those won't hurt the bunny either. Enjoy!

Never ever no matter what put a guinea pig with a Rabbit. They need to eat different food as their pellet foods are very differnet.

The most important thing however is that a rabbit can kill a guinea pig with it's kick. They wont do it to try and hurt it, but your guinea pig will get hurt very badly.

Don't let them play together either, the pig can get hurt in just a few seconds.

The best thing if you want to get another play mate is either find someone who has a male pig who will let them play together or get him fixed and get him a female friend.

Normally unless you have avery very big cage, or they were raised together, two unfixed males will fight.

However getting a male fixed doesn't cost much and is very safe.

And any pet store who tells you that a guinea pig can get along with a rabbit doesn't know what they're talking about.

Take a look a www.guineapigcages.com

They have some great ideas on cages that you can make, maybe you can make one that keeps both animals together but with a wall between, that way they can get nose to nose, but the pig can't get kicked. And the cages are far bigger then anything store bought but far cheaper too.

They also have some really good care information that you should take a look at.

I read on a site somewhere that rabbits and guinea pigs can definately be put together, but you have to watch out is the rabbit isnt spayed/neutered beacuse there has been cases when they became territorial and have killed the guinea pig.

Guinea pigs can NOT eat rabbit food and vice versa. Guinea pigs have special requirements like they can not make vitamin c so you have to provide it for them, rabbits can make their own vitamin c.

Rabbits can also accidentally jump forward and their legs could go into the guinea pigs tummy causing internal bleeding.

I know that you are trying to do the best by both of your pets but for the safety of the guinea pig and the rabbit please do no put them together. You are better off getting another male guinea pig. Males can be housed together with out fighting but you need to introduce them properly.

Absolutely not, and anyone who says other wise is very ignorant. Trust that the rabbit will seriously injure or even kill the guinea pig.

If you want your guinea pig to have a buddy, get another guinea pig of the same sex, or of the opposite sex if it's fixed.

If you want your rabbit to have a buddy you need to get your current rabbit fixed, and introduce it to another fixed rabbit.

Well,Guinea pigs and Rabbits can happily live together in a cage and its great your getting a big cage for the both of them.I would watch Shadow and Hala-Kahiki to make sure there is no aggression.Just take them out for about an hour a day and watch them,if they do fine during playtime have them spend a night together in one of the cages and place it beside your bed incase of fighting. If they do fine, then you may buy the new cage.

About the food,When at feeding time,Feed them Seperate to avoid fighting and at which the Rabbit may kick the Guinea pig and Kill/Hurt it.

Its a blast having them,As I have 3 pregnant rabbits and a pregant Guinea pig,so Im gonna have my hands full.

Good luck and God Bless-Brittany.

I would NOT recommend it. I have a guinea pig and a rabbit (just like you!), and they LOVE to play with each other. Yes, guinea pigs are social pets, but, there are some dangers that could go wrong. Like, the food (like you said), a rabbit could kick your guinea pig if the guinea pig was in the way..... trust me, there are just too many bad things that could go on! Let them have their own seperate cage. You can let them out and play, because that is good for the both of them, and, let them be friends, just not cage mates.

Thanks for taking this answer! Thanks!

Guinea Pigs can suffer a fatal respiratory infection if exposed to Bordetella. Bordatella is carried by asymptomatic rabbits. It can cause severe pneumonia. Streptococcus can cause serious/fatal disease in guinea pigs, and is very contagious from pig to pig. In other words, rabbits can be carriers of certain viruses that they may not get sick from, but can be fatal to guinea pigs. They should NEVER be housed together because of this risk!

I don't think them in the same cage is a good idea. But if you want them to have each others company while not out of cages I would put to cages next to each other.
