Thomas Jefferson - even though he was a slave owner, his writings - and, of course, his contributions to the constitution - were hundreds of years ahead of contemporary thinking. It can't be overlooked that, until the French Revolution which happened shortly before - and probably inspired - the American Revolution, the concept of equality for EVERYONE - not just the aristocracy - was unthinkable.
Without Thomas Jefferson's thinking and writings the (ongoing) battle for abolition or civil rights could NOT have been fought.

Many, but Thomas Jefferson created the concept because he saw that at some point the ideal of slavery was bogis and a greatly misguided idea at best. He also began to understand that over time this practice could be elimanated by changing what people grow

"the British guy who ended the slave trade" John Wilberforce

as was said, the Boston abolitionists

but Max Smart has the right answer........do you know that more Americans died in the Civil War than ALL out other wars COMBINED? Take the number of dead from the Revolution, 1812, Mexican, Spanish American, WW1, WW2 Korea Vietnam Grenada Panama Gulf, and Iraq..........it doesn't total the dead in a war fought without airplanes, or exploding shells, or napalm, or machine guns...........just white Americans killing white Americans so that black Americans could be free...........

Check out the history of the Quakers. They were a Christian sect that started the Underground Railroad. They believed that all people should have the same freedoms.
