I just went to the local hardware store and got a drill bit that was made for that. It shouldn't be all that odd to find like that other person was saying. People at homedepot don't normally know what you're looking for either, keep that in mind.

if it is a poured concrete wall you will need to rent a core drill and also a 5 inch bit with it. but if you have never done this before I would recommend hiring a pro to do it. If it is a concrete block wall then just mark out the hole in the wall then use a hammer drill with a 1/4 inch drill bit and drill about twenty or so holes all the way around the circumference then beat it open with a hammer and chisel. good luck

I'm pretty sure Milwaukee makes a bit that big if you need a nice clean hole cut through. The drawbacks are the bit is pretty expensive and you'll probably only use it once, as well you'll need a drill big enough to power it. You could draw a nice circle on your brick and drill a bunch of holes along your circle mark with a smaller bit and a small hammer drill, then clean it up a little if necessary with a variety of grinder or masonry bits.

It takes a "core drill" bit. it's hard to find cuz most drills won't cut that heavy. There are companies that will come out and drill it for you ( in the yellow pages under concrete I think) Most people find it's too expensive and just use a hammer and chisel. Or a roto hammer that you rent at any any tool rental place.

if you are planning on drilling only the one hole and want to do it quick easy and cheap
simply buy a 3/8 inch masonary bit
draw out your 5 inch circle now drill holes about 3/4 inch apart all the way around your perimeter...

this will take about 40 minutes

after drilling the holes strike the center a few times with a 3 pound hammer the concrete circle will fall out

the coring bit your are referring to is not cheap and if your not planning to drill out several holes not worth the major investment

drill the smaller holes with the money saving way and treat yourself to a good dinner on what you saved

enjoy

You could get a smaller drill and make swiss cheese out of the concrete and then bust it out with hammer and chisel.

Rent a core drill with a bit. Have the rental people show you how to use it.

A core driller will go through any rebar as well. Masonary bits won't get through the steel.

If you're real macho you don't need a drill.
