sounds like it is hanging on a boot load program that is trying to load after your wallpaper.
easiest thing is to boot in Safe Mode
go to >START >RUN "MSCONFIG" enter
go to GENERAL and check DIAGNOSTIC STARTUP
Exit and reboot normally.
Then go back to MSCONFIG, check Normal boot and go to Startup.
Uncheck 1/2 of the programs, exit and reboot. (remember what u unchecked)
If it boots normally, go back and recheck 1/2 of what u unchecked and reboot. Repeat until u locate the program that is hanging.
If it doesn't reboot, go back to Safe mode and redo above.
when normally booted , uncheck only the other 1/2 previously checked. reboot. continue till u find the offending program.
It could also be that a hardware driver is trying to load into defective hardware or the driver is bad.
That is a lot harder to find. But it is probably com port related- USB, serial, parallel, firewire.
Again, safe mode and try to disable hardware ports and unload drivers till u find it.
I had a laptop USB port go bad. I couldn't disable it. It didn't get as far as yours, it wouldn't boot to safe mode so I ran a diagnostic and somehow decided it was USB - it didn't actually tell me. had to replace MB.
