My 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis sounds like it is out of oil when starting. Is okay after the oil pressure comes up in 1 to 2 seconds. What needs to be replaced?

Maybe a fan belt or the starter

I'd have a shop install a manual pressure reading oil gage. If only to accurately monitor the noise and pressure at start-up.

You may simply have an oil filter with a bad pressure relief valve. If working normally the filter does not let all the pressure side oil return to the pan between start-ups.

A new Motercraft oil filter has the the anti-drainback valve. Change the oil without adding a heavier snake additive to mask a problem. It will either take care of the knocking or with a low pressure gage reading, a new oil pump may be in order.

I'd do the least expensive things first.

first check the oil to make sure its not too low. if it is low try changing the oil and making sure the correct amount is added after you know it is completely drained. if you know how, do it on your own, otherwise take it somewhere to be done. the first time it starts after the oil is changed, it might sound the same but after that it hopefully wont.

if the oil isnt too low, check the oil pump. it is only a 2003 but it may be getting weak and not pumping enough oil for your engines needs anymore

Have you tried changing the oil?? MAybe the place you have changing it isn't putting in heavy enough weight oil.

Also, some company's oil filters have a valve to retain oil and prevent the dry start.

Change it once yourself so yoiu know it was done correctly and se what happens/ You will get one start like that initially, unless you prime the filter, but htry a mercury filter, and the specified weight oil.

Chances are if it a squeeling or screaching sound you either have just a loose or worn fan belt. If it had anything to do with the oil, it probably would not just go away.
