My mom is a total religious fanatic,(sorry, but she is.)She doesn't let me do anything. Like read books like Harry Potter, because there witchcraft and it's "Evil". Well, today I realized my mom took 4 of my Harry Potter books and hid them. She took one before, and I asked for it, but she wouldn't give it to me. Even after my told my dad about it, which he didn't really help but say I could have it the next morning, she still didn't give it back. I found it in her closet the next day but..
You would have though I'd be more careful of where I hide my books. But I'm not sure when she took the other books, as they were spread around my room, hiding, but probably not very well.I know my mom has the books, I asked her -nicely- but she still says I've been "disobediant" and says "she'll think about it." I know she won't give them back, but I need some reassurance, or what you think. She can't just snoop around my room and steal my books right? What should I do? Im 13, btw, sorry i'm whiny..

Ask your mother that if she is going to prevent you from reading the books, she ought to at least read them herself to confirm that they are indeed "evil."
Remind her that while the books do contain many references to magic and witchcraft, these terms are simply similies for the power of the human soul, and the whole point of the books is the triumph of Good over Evil. You can even point out that the good characters praise and thank God at several points, so their witchcraft does not prevent them from respecting and believing in God.

Your mother does have the right to monitor what you own and what you read, and to enact reasonable punishments if you break rules, but I think her tactics are rather unfair. Remind her that snooping in your room is an invasion of your privacy, and she shouldn't do that without reasonable proof that you've broken the rules or have forbidden items. Remind her that you can't prove you are trustworthy unless she is willing to trust you.

She has a right as your mom to take your books and tell you you can't read them. But maybe you should sit down and talk to her in a mature fashion and let her know that you understand that Harry Potter is make believe and that it doesn't effect your religion. You might want to ask her to read up on the books and maybe ask her to read them herself to prove to her that although they may have witchcraft in them, they aren't "evil" books that are going to mess with your head. You also shouldn't hide things from your mother. That's another reason she's not wanting to give your books back to you. You're showing her that you're not mature enough to handle the responsibility of reading them by hiding them.

I don't think she's right in taking them, but I also think you could approach this a different way. By the way, I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan, and I sympathize with you. Maybe try doing what I said in the first paragraph.

Best of luck with your mom, my mom's a bit the same =)

Tell your mother to read the first book so she can see for her self just how "evil" it is. I think that if she has an ounce of common sense she'll see that the books aren't evil at all. And unfortunately, yes, she can sneak into your room....her house, her rules. On an upnote though...only 5 years till you're 18!!

OMG!, my family was just like that when they started coming out with the books. As soon as they heard that people were burning them bc they thought that they were evil, my family almost forbade me from reading them any more. So, I hid them, just like you. I hid them in a new place every day, so if someone in my family wanted to take them, they'd have to really snoop to find them. I'd steal them back from your mom. I mean, she snooped in your room to find them, so why not retaliate? Well, I mean, it would work with my mom, but depending on how much trouble you want to be in just to read the books, I'd seriously think about it first.

Sorry your mom's like my family. They came around in the end, though, maybe she will too.

sorry. You should tell your mom that they are not books teaching witchcraft and that they are only make believe, just like the history books in school. good luck. she just loves you and wants the best for you.

I'm sorry to tell you that your mom has every right to be in your room because actually it's not yours--it's heir's and your dad's room (your room belongs in thier house.) My suggestion is to repurchase the books and hold them at a friend's house.

You can do a few things:

A) Steal them back.
B) Talk to her about the issue and explain that you are not as religious as she as and feel as if you have the right to do as you please. Explain the book is FICTITIOUS.

"Thou Shalt Not Steal." If she went into your room to "confiscate" the books, then it seems she's broken this commandment. I'd point that one out to her.

wow... i'm soo sorry...

If she doesn't want you reading the books, as her parents, she can take them away and not give them back.

Instead of being mad about the magic... She should be mad about all the killing...man I'm still traumatized.
