They will eat about anything. I have a Dwarf Gourami (2 inches) and he eats flake food, frozen bloodworms, Ghost Shrimp (sometimes), algae wafers, cucumber slices, and shrimp pellets. Normal Gouramis can get up to 12 inches and show more aggression. They are a very fun fish to watch because of their unique swimming style. They spin their pectoral fins and hover. Have fun with them! They are actually very easy to breed and they protect their young as soon as they leave the bubble nest (the parents might need a couple tries before getting it).

By the way, they do breath air, but it is very untrue that they enjoy dirty water. They prefer sparkling water, they are fine in less perfect conditions though. They are closely related to Bettas (Bettas are Gouramis).

Gouramis are cool fish. They are a very good fish for beginners. Some varieties are aggressive and will eat anything smaller than them. The coolest thing about them is that they can breath air and most don't like ultra clean water. The most interesting variety of gourami is the kissing gourami. That's how they fight - by "kissing" :)

The gouramis or gouramies are a family, Osphronemidae, of freshwater perciform fishes. The fish are native to Asia, from Pakistan and India to the Malay Archipelago and north-easterly towards Korea.

Many gouramies have an elongated ray at the front of their pelvic fins. Many species show parental care: some are mouthbrooders, and others, like the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), build bubble nests. Currently, about 90 species are recognised, placed in 4 subfamilies and about 15 genera.

The name Polyacanthidae has also been used for this family. Some fish now classified as gouramies were previously placed in family Anabantidae. The subfamily Belontiinae was recently demoted from the family Belontiidae. As labyrinth fishes, gouramis have a lung-like labyrinth organ that allows them to gulp air and use atmospheric oxygen. This organ is a vital innovation for fishes that often inhabit warm, shallow, oxygen-poor water.

I had Gouramis and really enjoyed them. This was a long time ago, but as I recall, they nip the tail fins of other fish. Otherwise, they're good and quite graceful. I fed all my fish Tetra Min flakes. They never complained. And the flakes don't cloud the water.

I have 2 dwarf gouramis in a 10 gallon with neon tetras and cory cats. They get along just fine but are a little feisty with each other. Its not a problem though. They eat tetra flake food.

I like Gourami's. I have, or rather my son has a couple in his tank, two opaline's. I have had Dwarf Gouramis, Gold, Blue, Opaline,PInk Kissing....I like them, they can be semi aggressive, but usually play nicely with others in a community tank. They will eat the regular tropical fish food flakes, they will eat pellets and all fish like brine shrimp and blood worms.

what type of gourami

There are alot of species out there.

i have owned the smaller one, (sparkling gourami) to the largest gouramie, true gourami(30 inches)

the commons ones are blue gouramies, dwarf gouramies, lerris, moonbeam, golden(form of the blue), snakeskin, thick lip, gaint gouramie, true gouramies. etc..

So it depends.

They will need a tank over 10 gallons. They are common fish, but they will need a large tank.
