You can start using them as soon as you start your period, so age or how long you have had your period is not an issue.
If you are uncomfortable with using them- then wait. It's completely personal preference.
Honestly, I do not use anything else. The first time may be weird, but it is a lot cleaner feeling, and you can do any activities wearing them.
If you do not have a light flow- I would try the Playtex Slimfits the first time you want to use them- they are thinner than most (diamater) and have a rounded tip and plastic applicator so they glide in really easily. Also, for the first time wait until you are a day or two into your period (or whenever it is the heaviest) so that you have the most flow.
They really don't hurt at all. If you pull it out when it is not ready (full) it may be a little uncomfortable, but when you tug the string you should be able to tell if it's ready. Tampons are the kind of thing you get the hang of really easily after 1 or 2 periods of use.

It's just a myth that you can't use tampons before having sex (I assume you haven't had sex since you're 14). I started my period at 11 and used tampons at age 13, and I didn't have sex til I was 18. So, it's not going to mess up you in some weird way if you do, trust me. And, it will hurt a bit at first, but once you get used them pads will feel like diapers.

I'm 14 years old and started my periods about 3 years ago. I didn't start using tampons straight away because 1-i felt no need to and 2-they sounded scary. i gave myself two years to get ready for the challenge of using tampons and i tried them, they were fine but personally i prefer pads unless i am going swimming. if you want to use them, then you go ahead and use them. 1 year is a perfect time to start wearing them because otherwise you will build up a fear of them.

I had to learn right when it happened (friends b-day party at the lake). It's not too bad. Remember to get the slim ones and take a deep breath. I don't think anybody gets it in the first time you try. Once you get over the idea, it's fine. You don't really feel it at all. Read the instructions through a couple times. Have it in your mind that you can do it. I can't do it sitting down and I think it's easier to do it standing. Good luck! You can do it. I promise.

You can use them whenever you want to. Physically, your body is ready for tampons the minute you get your 1st period, so it's up to you.
Once you start using tampons, you'll never want to use a pad again. You don't even feel a tampon.

It's completely normal to feel that way. You can start using tampons anytime you want with your period. I would recommend buying the plastic, slim or junior ones, they are more comfortable for younger girls.
