SweatPea, why do you always answer questions with some kind of clinton remark. There are people on here seriously trying to answer questions and help inform people. Your answer was a waste of your own time.......

Yes, I've read that Executive Order of July 17, and it's so broad, it can be used against anyone who is protesting the war in Iraq. The order also states that property can be blocked if there is a significant risk of an act, so a violent act is not even required. And giving material support to someone whose property is blocked can cause that person's property to be blocked too.

Scary stuff, and these kinds of orders can build on each other. If there's really a national emergency, Bush can simply write a new order, and broaden the scope.

I just read your source and you completely missed the point. He is not talking about protesting, he is talking about people who try to sabatoge military craft from going to Iraq. Or try to provide supplies or $ to insurgents.

Good question for discussion though!!!

Where is this quote from and where does it say anything about protesting.

No. Not seized. Frozen. Subtle legal distinction.

For your assets to be seized, you would need to be charged under the IEDPA (passed in the mid-1990s) and then convicted of doing that. Then your assets could be seized and forfeited.

Until then, Bush can only act unilaterally to freeze your assets.

And the underlying law (50 USC 1701) is about 3 years old.

You're right. But like many similar laws the decision to enforce those provisions are always poltical decisions, not legal decisions.

I think its time the cons and libs unite. We may all be in deep doo doo. I'm looking forward to some kind of formal explanation of exactly what this means.

No, it doesn't outlaw all forms of protest against the war. That's ridiculous.

Do your homework, there are dozens of these types of laws on the books. Many of them signed by Clinton too. Education can be a wonderful thing.
