And they promise to have the story up next. Then after 45 minutes and five commercial breaks later they have the story. It drives me crazy. I know it's a way to get you to stay tuned to the channel and up their ratings but it really is annoying.

You're right, it has nothing to do with exclusivety, and everything to do with the almighty $. If it really was THAT important, they wouldn't wait, so the next time they say they have an exclusive and it doesn't appear within 60 seconds, then trust me, you can probably survive the day without knowing exactly what it was.

One of the worst things to happen to television news departments is when the owners discovered they could make money off of it. Too many decisions like the one you describe happen. And you are absolutely right -- if it's really important, the station will lead the newscast with it, because it helps get people tuned in for the rest of the show.

A local station here had a report about an unsafe bridge in our town. It talked about it at noon and six, but didn't actually say where the bridge was until 11 p.m. They got roasted, and deservedly so.

Not to mention that competitor, if it's good, might be able to whip up a report in 45 minutes, thereby making it no longer exclusive.

It's the last week of July sweeps. The ratings aren't measured solely by what you watch, but also by how MUCH of each show you watch. The longer they can keep you, the better they do.
