We just got a Beta and the store said feed him 3 pellets a day, but the bottle says 6-8 twice a day. I'm scared to overfeed him. So far we've worked up to 8. Four in the morning, and 4 in the afternoon. Also, he's ready to breed and making a nest so we're wondering if he can still grow? How big do they get?

Do what the package says. I give my Betta 3 pellets twice a day, 3 when I wake up and 3 before I go to bed. It works out nicely. 3 a day is not a lot of food at all. 8 pellets is fine too. Are you sure it is a nest, not just air bubbles. The nest bubbles will be a milky color, air bubbles (from when he comes to the surface to breath) are transparent and not a sign of breeding. They get about 2-3 inches long and live for about 5 years.

Yes, it is entirely possible to overfeed your betta. The one thing to remember about feeding your betta is: bettas have very big appetites, but very small stomachs. They have stomachs that are roughly the size of their eyes, but they don't know how to stop eating and will literally eat themselves to death.

You should only feed your betta what he can eat in a minute. I feed mine HBH Betta Bites, which recommend 6-8 twice a day as well, but I only feed them around 4 pellets once a day.

Be aware that it's much better to underfeed your betta than to overfeed him. Bettas can go up to a week without food, completely unharmed; but one overfeeding and they can contract bowel diseases that can potentially plague them for the rest of their lives.

Oh yes - bettas can definitely grow larger even if they are building bubble nests. I bought mine when they were less than an inch in length, and they were blowing nests like crazy - now they are all about two inches long, not including tail. Give him a good amount of space - at least 2 gallons, in a tank, not a bowl - and clean water, and you will find that his finnage will also grow much longer and richer.

You can definitely overfeed a betta - I used to work in a pet shop that sold only tropical/saltwater fish, and I saw a betta that had died from overeating. I think 8 pellets a day is fine though. I feed mine about that and I have had him since January, so he is doing fine. I would go with what the bottle says rather than the pet shop, because pet shops often neglect their fish. Like the first person said, they grow to about 3 - 4 inches. I think they make nests from a pretty early age though, so he may still grow.

you can overfeed them. bettas can get fat and if fed to much they will have bowel problems.

2-3 pellets a day is what i feed, 8 is way to much.

Bettas usually get to about 2-3 inches(depending on fin type) gaint bettas have been selectivly breed to be over 8 inches long. But these bettas would be a couple of hundreds.

Dont forget, the food company wants you to feed your fishes alot, so you will run out faster and buy more food. just my little tick...

But 2-3 a day is fine.

o its betta, not beta.

Edit: it is possible to overfeed your fish todeath, to the above post. Angelfish are one of the species that can do this. It is when they keep eatting and explode their stomachs. It is possible, but bettas dont do this.

Overfeeding Betta Fish

8 a day is fine, it's not overfeeding that kills fish exactly, it's uneaten food in the tank converting to ammonia products that kill fish. Fish in the wild live very close to starvation however, and he'll make you think he is always hungry! But 8 a day should be just fine. Also Betta's generally arrive at pet stores full grown, yours may grow a tiny bit, but probably not much, if at all.

Thta's probably a bit much. Like some people, fish can easily over eat and get fat. I would suggest you feed him onoy as much as he can eat in 2-3 minutes twice a day. Try to mix up his diet a bit too. Add in some bloodworms, brine shrimp and things like that. I feed flakes or pellets once a day and a special food like those I mentioned once a day. I think it's better for the fish over all. MM

Yes, it's possible to overfeed any fish. I believe they can grow to be about 2 inches, excluding tail.

Feed your fish as much as he can eat within several minutes twice a day. Remove any excess food. They don't get very big. Only about 3-4 inches.
