it's been proven that a fetus is incapable of feeling pain until 22 weeks. so no, the fetus will not feel pain. and if anyone says otherwise, they're lying to you to try to make you feel guilty, which in turn will make your friend feel guilty.

The correct way to think about this is NOT the pro life way. When you were born, do you remember any pain? Of course not. Being capable of feeling pain and having the pain register as pain is completely different. So the answer is that no one knows if there is any pain, but no one remembers any pain prior to child birth. Just think of the pain of birth that a child endures, if the object is to have no pain, there should be no birth.
There is a 100 % chance if a fetus is brought to term it will begin feeling pain some time after birth. The facts are that 100 million children will be born that cannot be supported by their parents and those children will be born in a life of pain. Some will be raped, some will starve to death, some will be killed by their parents, some will just have an awful life of deprevation. So if you have compassion, and if you do not think your child will get all that is required for a good life, then you should abort. A fetus feels no pain, but a child does.
And don't think that being pro life is a good thing. Each child that is "saved" causes the death of 12 loved and wanted children. http://www.prolifeismurder.com

Hello Kate,
I was curious as well, so I searched for clinical studies that looked for fetal pain related to possible in-utero surgery; weather the fetus would need to be anesthetized for surgery. I figured that would be more accurate than sites that were hoping to scare someone away from an abortion by saying the fetus suffered horrible pain, but had no real research to back it up. I kept an open mind as I searched.
Apparently, the answer is, it seems that a fetus does not perceive pain before 24 weeks. There's lots of really big words here, but the conclusion is, the fetus does not have the brain development or nerve development or connections to the brain to perceive pain.

Good luck to your friend!

From babycenter.com - 11 weeks:
"Your fig-sized baby is now fully formed — measuring 1 1/2 inches long and weighing in at a quarter of an ounce. His skin is still transparent, allowing many of his blood vessels to show through. Some of his bones are beginning to harden, and tiny toothbuds are starting to appear under his gums. His fingers and toes have separated, and he may soon be able to open and close his fists. He's already busy kicking and stretching, and his tiny movements are so fluid they look like water ballet. These movements will increase as his body grows and becomes more developed and functional. As his diaphragm develops, your tiny tenant may also start to get the hiccups. Because he's still so small, though, you won't feel any of his workouts or intrauterine gulps until sometime between weeks 16 and 20."
Yeah, the brain, spine and nerves are the first thing to develop in a fetus, by the time it's "fully formed" it's perfectly capable of sensing pain.

I'd have to say yes...
especially since its been so long (11weeks)
well i personally think that no matter what the baby will feel pain, although this is NOT a proven fact. The only true person who knows is God and the baby itself...
i personally wouldnt for the fact that i wouldnt want to cause any pain just in case .....along w/ other reason i personally feel but thats about all...

I have to agree with Nancy Kay. There really is no way to know for sure but everyone is going to have their opinions. She needs to do some research of her own before making such a drastic and permanent decision. She also doesn't have a lot of time since most clinics don't do the procedure after 12 weeks.
I also advice to her to stay away from most pro-life sites. They usually give out false info and doctored videos. Here is a site that isn't pro life or pro choice:
Most fetuses can not feel pain until about the 28th of gestation because until then they haven't formed the necessary nerve pathways.

Not only will the baby feel pain, the mother(your friend) will feel more pain during and after the abortion, this is a serious prohibited thing to do, I'm not rude, I think your friend has been fed a lie for her to believe as the truth, Jimmy.

Yes the baby would feel pain, there is already a heart beat and all the organs are present. If she is going to have an abortion she is running out of time. Legal abortions in most states stop at 12 weeks.

This is what an 11-week-old fetus looks like:
http://www.babycenter.com/general/1498240.html
Here's info about where the baby is at developmentally:

Here's the wiki article on fetal pain (so you don't have to go to a right-to-life site).

I would personally draw the conclusion that yes, the baby could feel pain. I'm sorry your friend has to deal with an unwanted pregnancy, but I would personally suggest counseling and ask her to consider adoption as an alternative to abortion.

From my searches it is around 28 weeks when the baby is able to feel a pain as the nervous system is developed and can actually cry as well.

Just like you have a heart and you feel pain, the fetus is already a child and human and it's heart is beating right now. Death is not painful to some people. Sorry, but you did ask.
