I'd be wary of buying him any kind of racquet, because it's important that he tests out a piece of equipment like that before he makes a decision. I know that I wouldn't be very excited to get a racquet from someone because I need to feel like one "fits" me, and I think you need to start that player-racquet relationship one-on-one. The same holds true, really, for shoes. The only exception I'd make is if he already told you exactly what he wants, but make sure you take into consideration how he might want a racquet strung (ie. tight or loose). You're much safer buying supplies (eg. balls) than the equipment.

A gift card for a place that sells either of these items would work. Or, you could personalize it by offering to take him out and purchase the racquet/shoes of his choice. That would also allow him a chance to get accessories, while allowing him to develop immediately that connection with a given racquet.

If he has an iPod, maybe you could get him a gift card for iTunes. Then he can download some new songs for his run. I know that new music on my iPod always gets me excited for a run.
