I checked my transmission fluid over the weekend, one day it was low, but I don't think I let the car run long enough, for two minutes before checking it. On Sunday, I ran the car for ten minutes into town and back, I checked it again, and got a different result, the transmission fluid looked like it was a couple of inches above the full mark.

I took it into Canadian Tire and asked them to drain some of it, they did the opposite and said it was low and added in more. I ran it home and the fluid was higher on the dip stick then it originally was yesterday.

I drive a 94 Achieva S, automatic.

So how do I know if its at the right level or not? How long should I run it for before checking it? Need some help.

Thanks
Lindsay

when I checked the trasnmission fluid after I drove the car home, and this is a ten minute drive, the fluid was close to being half way up the dip stick. What should I do now?

Warm the car up to operating temperature, but on the parking brake and put the car in neutral, then check it.

just run it up to normal operating temp, then, be sure to check it WITH THE MOTOR RUNNING, not turned off like you do with the oil. pull the dipstick, clean it off, reinsert it all the way, pull it out and look at it right away. It should be right up to the top line on the end of the dip stick. Too much fluid causes problems too. As long as it is between the upper and lower mark, your fine. If it get's to the lower mark, add a little at a time, it doesn't take much to fill it.

First of all u should check it while it is running in park. If you just started the car and haven't driven it yet let it run for 5 minutes and go thru all the gears and back to park then check it. If you just driven the car for at least 10 minutes just put it in park and then check it whatever it reads its accurate unless its the wrong dipstick for the car!!!
Good Luck!!!

well u took ur car to canadian tire...that was ur first mistake...the trans fluid level will be different when hot or cold ...follow the instructions on the dipstick...some cars need to be in park and running and some cars need to be in neutral and running....u may have to check it several times after driving the car...to get accurate results....

SET HANDBRAKE, CHECK THAT VEHICLE IS IN PARK AND START VEHICLE, RUN FOR AT LEAST 15 TO 20 MINUTES OR UNTIL THE HEATER INSIDE IS BLOWING HOT

WITH THE HEATER BLOWING HOT YOU WILL KNOW THAT THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE IS CORRECT.

NOW YOU CAN CHECK THE TRANS FLUID LEVELS CORRECTLY.
