For all their hatred of Middle England, the Labour Party knows on which side it's bread is buttered so they will make appropriate noises where the money is.
David Cameron, on the other hand, plays a different game. Despite the fact that his constituents are up to their necks in raw sewage, he hangs around just long enough for the cameras to catch him wading through the water like General MacArthur before departing for Rwanda where he can be all pink and fluffy again whilst pretending that the real misery back home isn't happening.

The south makes more money and is more densely populated.
I don't think it's a political reason as most of the government's support is in the North - there are few labour seats in the South outside of London - they are almost all tory and lib dem.
I don't believe that the fact the south is more economically valuable is a GOOD excuse - but you must not forget that now the floods are affecting more people as well.

We've had massive floods in the South of England for a few years now. And the Environment Agency and Insurance companies were the ones to deal with them. The govt is holding reviews now to decide future ways of stopping this and the majority of the floods are in the North. Not South.

It is a good pont, although the floods are supposedly 'worse' in the south. Although how you measure the gravity of flooding is beyond me...clearly it is more than mere height of floodwaters, since damage to property and disruption of life can occur in both regions, even if the waters were higher in the south than the north.

I'm not complaining today I enjoyed a BBQ in the north.
I feel so sad for the people who have lost all their possesions and the damage done to their homes too. This will take years to repair and is now something that needs looked at across the whole of the uk as its likely to happen again.

I have a feeling that someone in office suddenly realised, when the news about domestic water contamination in the Severn basin came out, that they could either spend a king's ransom on compensation once the first cholera and typhoid cases were diagnosed or they could spend comparatively little now in damage control and repair.

they have not and will not actually do anything.
In exactly the same way as the floods in the north they will 'talk' about doing something but i gaurantee that nothing will be done.

So what should he do then- have a word with God and get him to hold the rain back or move it elsewhere? We are ALL responsible for global warming- yes EVEN YOU- so we are all responsible for the floods!!!! We cannot blame the government for everything.

Its down to economics. As the majority of southerners work its important to keep things working. Up in Hull etc the vast majority of people arent interested in working and watch daytime television etc. There is no urgency to get things cleared.
