Cigars really aren't that bad if you don't inhale and smoke in moderation. Most cigar smokers don't inhale unless they have a history of smoking cigarettes. One cigar doesn't equal 72 cigarettes, more like 2-3 cigars equals a pack of 20. Cigar tobacco isn't treated and cured like cigarettes and it doesn't have all the harsh chemicals in it. Ask him to cut back to 2-3 cigars a week and he will be fine. Anti-smoking agencies spread more propaganda than tobacco agencies. Sure cigarettes are horrible, but cigars really aren't that bad, at least in moderation. Again, 2-3 a week isn't that bad.

If he is working on his diet and exercise, work with him on that, encouraging him to be and feel healthier.

Once this is established, suggest that he reduce his smoking. Every other day isn't too bad, and if he is cutting out some favorite foods, he may want to hang onto his cigars for comfort for a while.

If he gets really into the "new, healthier" him, he'll want to cut down on the smoking on his own.

I'm sorry about your dad smoking, but I have a few questions before I answer this. Does he get angry when you do something to him? How old is your dad? And also, what all have you tried to make him stop?

if your really dedicated to stop him from smoking. then get ur family, and some of his friends (that dont smoke) together and have an intervention. talk about ur fears if he doesnt quit and how u love him and stuff like that. and let everyone have a turn of that.
it can get quite emotional sometimes but u have to go through it and finish the whole thing. then let him have his go at talking and then talk as a group. this will really get it to him how much all of his loved ones want him to stop smoking and want him in theyre lives for so much longer.

Well, for starters you can tell your father the serious risks of smoking and how it can affect him later in the future. You can convince him that he would be doing himself a good by not smoking. If you truly wish for your father to quit smoking you will find a way to assit him in doing so.

Get him to his doctor who will outline for him the dangers of smoking. His diabetes will never go away (I am a diabetic); however, he can greatly reduce its effect and advancement through diet and medication. That same doctor who monitors his diabetes OUGHT to be talking to him about stopping smoking. You have tried and failed. Let the doctor take over. Call him and tell him of your concerns for your father.

Chow!!

To get my dad to stop chewing tobacco, I got like 60 pages of statistics and sat them on his desk. The next day, he came home and was still chewing. The next day, I got pictures of people who had toungue and mouth cancer and sergeries and stuff (really really graphic pictures) and he never did it again.
