I usually do, but don't beat myself up if I've purchased something really cute and want them to wear it right away. Besides all the starch and dye and pawing that others have mentioned, often stores use harsh pesticides and other exterminators for rodents, and that chemical stays on the clothing long after the store's air has cleared. Better safe than sorry, most of those chemicals build up in your soft tissues.

Yes I always do. I still wash clothes before first use for my 3 year old as well as our baby. As one of the previous folks stated, there could be germs from sneezing and illnesses. Also, who knows what kind of residue could be on clothes from transport. There was an episode of House (on Fox) and a kid got sick from wearing clothes that had pesticide residue because the clothes were transported in a truck with pesticide residue.
For a young baby, it's a good idea to do a second rinse as well to make sure all the soap/detergent residue is washed out.
Regards,
mari

I would wash pajamas and blankets and stuff, but if we were dressing up and going out I would usually put something on fresh from the store. I love that new clothes look before they've been washed. None of my kids ever got a rash or anything. They were fine.
And as a sidenote, you usually don't have to use baby detergent either. My pediatrician said to wash one outfit with my regular wash and if there were no rashes or irritation, I could wash all their clothes with mine. I should probably mention that neither my hubby or I have sensitive skin or allergies, so if you do, I would be more careful. Otherwise, give it a try.

I do. My family raised me to be such a clean freak, and it becomes such a hassle sometimes. I wash the clothes because I don't know who touched in the store and if those people washed their hands after using the restroom or picking their nose or something. All sorts of shoppers have probably examined the clothing you've bought, and they could have had God knows what on their hands. That's why I always wash everything before I let my son wear it or use it.

I always wash new clothes when I buy them. You never know who tried them on or if some of the dye could cause an allergic reaction. I wash them and put my washer on a double rinse to make sure they are clean and well rinsed and have never had a problem.

I always always do - as most have said its because i don't know who has handled them or if she'll have a reaction to the dye etc.
It does become a pain though - when she was born i got tons of clothes from friends as presents and spent the first day or two out of hospital washing them all!

Absolutely, for the same reason that I wash my own before wearing. How many people touched that pair of jeans before you bought them? How many of those people wash their hands after using the restroom or sneezing?
I also wash my daughter's clothes first because then they are nice and soft, and they have the softener scent that she knows.

Yes, just to be on the safe side. My daughter doesn't seem to be allergic to anything but you never know. I like the way it fits after you wash it anyways. Sometimes clothes tends to be stiff before you wash it. I also like the smell of Dreft and other baby detergents.

Yes, I have personally seen people in the store sneeze or cough into their hand, and touch things.... heck I've done it!! Not on purpose, but who doesn't have to sneeze sometimes!
With a baby, I always washed everything. My daughter is 4 now... I'm not as vigilant about it.
***EDIT*** and i work in a women's clothing store now, and when i'm assigned to do freight sometimes the boxes have a wierd smell to them when they're opened... that's kind of creepy.
