I disagree in the sense that liberals want SMALL government in the social sector. They only want government involved with my paycheck. The fiscal elements of liberal thought are socialist (welfare, business regulations), but the social aspects (gay marriage, legalized drugs, etc) are not. Socialism is an authoritarian state, and liberals wouldn't care what I did, so long as I turned in my entire paycheck every month "for the common good". So I only half agree with you.

I agree that they want big government. I think most liberals do not really want socialism, only the very far left. Most liberals seem to appreciate the capitalist system but they want the rich and big corporations pay the majority of taxes.
