The general rule is one inch of full-grown fish per gallon of aquarium water. So you'd be good with about 55 to 58 inches of fish in your tank. Make sure you use the maximum size of the fish when calculating, not the size of the fish you're buying.

Don't get Plecos or Catfish. Plecos get about 2 feet long and will poop more than they eat algae (so basically, it makes more algae than it cleans). Plecos are Catfish, and any type of Catfish you would want would either be killed by the Cichlids, or get far too big.

For the Cichlids, you could either do a South American setup or an African setup. The African Cichlids are generally more colorful and aggressive. You could do 4 Electric Yellow and 4 Electric Blues with some Killifish. That would be an extremely colorful tank. Make sure you research each fish's prefer ed water conditions though.

For a South American setup, I would either recommend some Dwarf Cichlids like Rams or Apistos, or Convict Cichlids. Again, research each fish. Good luck!

Edit: To all the idiots that said "one inch of fish per gallon of water", that rule has been outdated for years and in very few circumstances does it work. You can't keep a 10 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank, it wouldn't be able to turn around.

It would depend on the fish you have. Cichlids can grow pretty big. Plecos can grow REALLY big. Catfishes don't grow as big. Do you plan to add plants and other decoration in the tank? I would say, 2-3 cichlids, a few catfish and maybe 1 pleco. You might want to check out the dwarf plecos. I raise the albino bristlenose plecos. So far, the biggest one isn't that big. I'd say about 3-4".

A gallon per fish per inch is what I was taught. Cichlids get to be pretty big when they're full grown, so I would say 6 at the most. You can add more fish if the tank is well filtrated, aerrated, and there are enough hiding places. Cichlids are agressive, and they might not hurt the placo but they might go after the cat fish.

Usually its good to have 1 gallon for every inch of fish you get. I would reccomend 6-7 cichilids, one or two catfish, and just a few pleco. Maybe you would also like to put other tropical fish in such as danios or tetras.
