It's swimming around in the bag right now and I've got a fishbowl for it (from previous pets). What should I do so I take good care of it?

It's nice that someone gave you a present! Fill the bowl with clean tap water and use a de-chlorinator to remove any chlorine from the water. That will kill your fish if you don't. Then, until you can get a larger bowl or tank for him, make sure that you change his water every 2-3 days. Have an extra container handy for this. You'll need to do 100% water changes. The best way to do it is, when you put him in one bowl, clean and fill the other bowl too (don't use any soap). Let the empty bowl sit out and when it's time to clean the bowl that he's in, just move him over to the new bowl. That's it, and then clean and fill the old bowl - you'll always have a bowl ready to go for him. He really should be eating betta flakes or pellets. Goldfish food is designed for goldfish. Bettas are a warm water fish with different nutritional requirements. There are several site on the internet that can tell you all the things to help you properly care for your new little pet. But, for the moment, this will help. Please don't listen to the person who said put a plant on him and let him eat the roots. That is just completely wrong information. Bettas don't eat roots, he will starve and suffocate with a plant on top of him. He should be fine with the directions that I've given you until you can get him a larger home. But, you should get him a larger home. You can keep a puppy in a one foot by one foot metal cage. He won't die, but he won't have any quality of life. Same thing for your little betta. Good luck and hope he does well!!

Wash your bowl out with hot water, no soap or anything
Hope you got a conditioner
Fill your bowl with water and put the conditioner as directed
Then put the bag with your betta in the bowl and let it float for at least 30 min, that he can acclimate to the new temperature, after that you can release him
Also don't forget that you have to change the water, I would recommend 50% every 3 days with a gravel siphon until you get a bigger tank
If you really want to take care of him, get at least a 2.5 gallon tank ASAP with filter and heater
In a bowl you will shorten his life dramatically like only up to 2 years survival, but in a tank with proper care he can live up to 7 years
When you have a tank, you need to do partial waterchanges of 25% with a gravelsiphon weekly
As for the feeding, don't feed him that food, don't feed him until you can get to the store and get him the food he needs, usually they won't eat the first couple of days anyway, because of the environment change
Hope that helps
Good luck

You should research before you buy fish, but since you didn't do that precious little for the safety of your fish, it is going to suffer. Bowls are not good homes for any creatures, even Bettas prefer 2+ gallons. Go pay $10 for a 2 gallon tank, and then we'll talk. For now, fill the bowl with water and float the Betta in the bowl (put the bag with the fish inside, and float the bag in the bowl water). Before adding the Betta, add dechlorinator to the bowl water to make it fish safe.
Edit: Bettas don't eat plants. Putting a plant at the top will likey suffocate him. Bettas are insectavores (they eat bugs) and will not even touch the plant.

Put it in the bowl and make sure to feed him twice a day! With betas, bubble blowers are optional, but it makes it more fun for your fish!

If you put a plant at the top of the fish tank and let the roots hang in the bowl then you hardly have to feed them they eat off the plant. just keep the bowl clean and feed your fish
