Once I saw this really pretty fish at Petsmart; I think it was a type of goldfish and looked like a shubunkin but it was only 2-3 inches long and costs $2.00. I thought shubunkin were a lot larger?? It was white with black and orange spots and long fins. How big are they when they are babies? Also if I dont get this type of fish what breed should i get for a 20 gallon tank and also a 50 gallon pond?

Well, if it looked like a goldfish and had white black and orange, it was a shubunkin. The black is the differentiating characteristic between sarasa comets, which are orange or red with white and shubunkins. It sounds like you know what shubunkins look like. All fish start off the same. Tiny little spots. Even large fish have to start off somewhere. They aren’t born automatically large. If you saw a shubunkin that was only 2-3 inches long, it was just a very young goldfish. If you want a shubunkin, you should allow about 40-50 gallons of water for one fish in an aquarium and at least the same for a pond; however, if you live in an area that freezes in winter, you will need to bring in your fish in the winter unless your pond is a minimum of 18 inches deep and at least 3-4 feet in length. I'm very glad that you're taking the time to find out about what type of fish to get before you get them. Good for you!

Convict Cichlids, Guppies, Platties and Swordtails are all good beginner fish to breed. If you Google any of those fish and then the word "breeding", you will find more info than anyone on Yahoo! Answers could give you. By the way, it was just a young Goldfish. Fancy Goldfish get almost 10 inches long. If you really wanted to breed Goldfish, a 20 gallon tank is the bare minimum for fancies.

I like feeder goldfish. Sure, some of them die, but enough of them live that it's still cheaper than anything else.
