a boat is generally lighter than a ship
however the terms are referring to the same but the difference is in the weight of the craft. Also ship is used in reference to transporting large amounts of cargo or human cargo, thus begot the term "Shipping"

any large floating vessel capable of crossing open waters, as opposed to a boat, which is generally a smaller craft. The term formerly was applied to sailing vessels having three or more masts; in modern times it usually denotes a vessel of more than 500 tons of displacement. Submersible ships are generally called boats regardless of their size. In the U.S. a vessel smaller then 65ft is considered a small craft.
