With young children smaller calmer dogs are best. Herding type dogs of mid sized are suppose to be very good with children also. Yappy dogs often scare small children. To large of dogs also scare young children. It is all about how you train the dog in the end, any dog can be good if you train it to be good around children.

Golden Retrievers are usually very docile and great with children.
But with any dog, it's important to train them just as you would discipline your child. Some dogs have a better nature than others, but they have to be taught the difference between right and wrong consistently from the beginning which can be done at home, but they need to be worked with a lot every single day. So if you don't have that kind of time to invest as well as patience, it's probably best not to get a dog or any other animal that requires a lot of maintenance. (That's just from my experience with people and their pets).
And always adopt if at all possible, so many fantastic dogs in shelters need good homes.

If YOU want a dog, a bigger gentle breed like german shepherd, collie, lab, golden retriever.
Do us all a favor and adopt a MUTT. A MUTT is the best.
If you already have a dog, teach any dog that your children are part of their pack. Teach your children to respect and take care of their pets.
But if you are getting a dog for them, DON'T !
Dogs are a lot of work. Dogs need to be walked, even if you have a yard, Dogs need to be medicated, and fed a high quality-expensive food. They can live for 20+ years and require expensive treatment.
Wait until the children are older, so they can help more.
Thank you so much for being concerned about the welfare of a dog.

When I was born my parents owned and bred Golden Retrievers. They are great with kids. The bigger breeds are better for smaller children. My brother and his wife have a German Shepherd and have a 4 year old daughter & a 6 year old son. All the best;~)

I believe that a golden or labrador retriever would be suitable for young children. The breeds are known for their success as a family dog and for being playful & kind.

any dog would do as long as it is properly trained, if it isn't i wouldnt let it near your children until it is because dogs that are not traiend ca nbe harmful to young children; pitbulls and bulldogs have a very bad reputation but i have found that some of them are actually nice loving dogs when properly traiend but iwouldnt recommend it because they are hard to train right
