Terror is like the Drug War and the Cold War an over hyped reinvention of something, which has always been. It is used by the Government to justify huge budgets, without showing ever improvement and they can always blame it on the bad guy, that you need more money, more government.
If we want to protect our Democracy, we have to do it here, not 10,000 miles away in a desert, feeding the hounds of hell with hate for the invaders (USA Military). We gave them something to unite about.

From a military standpoint the answer is simple. It comes down to the willingness of each side to accept collateral civilian casualties. As a nation the United States does everything possible to avoid them. As terrorists, killing innocent people is kind of their plan. This makes things much harder for us. Make no mistake though, if it comes down to absolute neccesity we have the firepower to stop any terrorists we know the location of. We just would rather not use heavy bombers.
From a political and social standpoint, it is very different. Many people here see the war against terrorism as a marginal thing. They simply think that if we leave them alone, they will leave us alone. This causes a huge devide amoung our leadership, and devisivness always strengthens the opponent. The terrorist leaders, and followers see this as a historic battle for them to impose the rule of Allah, as they see it. Anytime you have a group that sees a war as a religious fight, as they do, they tend to be very resolute, and committed.
I believe the situation will come down to this. We have the strength to end terrorism on a large scale. We also have justice on our side. I feel it's simply a matter of how many more times do we need to be attacked before we galvinize together to stop it. Someone once said, "it's important for the world to know that the United States has a very long fuse, but if burned long enough, at the end is a very big bomb. I don't think this relates to nuking anyone, but we have lots of conventional weapons.

Terrorists are a lot like slap hitters in baseball or smallish guards in basketball. Their very approach dupes you into playing the game their way, when it's best to just overwhelm and over power them.
I guess I'm saying we should have eliminated the Taliban and Al Qaeda, no questions, with overwhelming force and no possibility of escape.

Criminals commit crimes every day, despite the govt having more money, more weaponry (usually), more people (police), etc. That doesn't stop them because the total number of criminals, and their ability to operate, isn't as limited as each individual criminal.
Terrorists operate the same way. There are thousands of terrorists groups worldwide, and it's very easy to operate under the radar for most of their activities. So, the amount of resources required to track down millions of criminals is far beyond what the US can do without sinking to their level.

They do have lots of money, many allege that Iran and Syria are using their vast wealth to fund terrorist organizations, and are using them as a proxy army to fight their wars without endangering their countries. They lack the technology we have, but suicide bombers and terrorist attacks are effective low-tech means for them to continue their campaigns.
The Western World has its hands tied, there is low public support for this war, the enemy hides among innocents and we can't level cities where they might be because the collateral damage is too great.

the United States is a joke, you guys waste all your men and material against Iraq, a country that was no threat to you, all because Georgie wanted revenge for an imagined attack against his dad, and Dick wanted the oil. Meanwhile, China is your biggest debt holder, not to mention a superpower that is buying the most oil and raising it's price, and not using or losing a soldier from it's multi-million man army, navy , or airforce. Not to mention it's nuclear weapons. Can you guys be any more stupid. Let's waste our war capabilities agaist a country that was no threat while our biggest threat silently builds it's war machine.
How is your Mandarin?

Then perhaps your theory of them not having weapons, money or the brain power is incorrect. These people are very rich-Bin Laden has millions of dollars and funds them, their weapons doesn't require much money since many are bombs which can be home-made and some government supports them financially and with arms. Also, i hate to say it but they are smart-you gotta be smart to convince people to kill themselves and have 14(?) virgins waiting for you.

Because we are fighting the war divided so we are using half the money, half the weaponry, half of the brain power... If we were truly united like WWII this thing would have been over.
