Well IM is instant messaging...like in instant messanger
PM - private message which in the old chat rooms was between two people and the rest of the room didn't get to see the discussion.

IM, instant messaging, is what is used in messaging programs like MSN messenger or Yahoo...
while PM, private messaging, is what is used in forums and chatrooms, these tend to be more public sites thus this why the necessity of pm comes where you only want one person to see your message.

IM = Instant Message
PM = Time between Noon and midnight.
