watch their body language. if they are those kind of people who use their hands a lot, watch their hands. people who are lying tend to stop using their hands so much because they are afraid it will give them away.
dont rely on eye contact too much. shy people, like myself, generally dont look directly into people's eyes for very long. and i've discovered that when i lie, i make better eye contact. i guess because im trying to see if they are bothering it.
also listen to their tone of voice, watch the way they are sitting or standing, all that jazz.

Scientist were never able to confirm the eye thing so I would not go around thinking that was true. Instincts is what you need. Trust you gut if you can and the first instinct is usually right on. The guy below is in idiot. I have A scientific Journal that says scientist could never confirm the eye thing, I have it in front of me. Sometimes people need to scan thier brain or look around because it takes timje for different people to remember things. Ask me a question and it might take me 5 minutes to remember what I did and i could be looking all around or everywhere. And if I lie, I lie quick and without thinking about it. Thats how you know if I lie.

I'm not sure the four corners trick is reliable. If it was, I had college professors who lied to me about the entire period of the Sassanid Empire.
Liars tend to look away from you, and they tend to have non-open body language. Look for the shoulders to slouch, looking away, lowering the head, arms near the body, etc. Mentally lying is avoidance, and that is reflected by the body.
Good liars won't do this, but they're rare, and hopefully you're not dealing in their areas.

The eye test does not work.
Try reading this:
"Never Be Lied to Again: How to Get the Truth In 5 Minutes or Less in Any Conversation or Situation" (Paperback)
by David J. Lieberman.

Yes, that does work. (up they're recalling something from memory, down they're thinking of something new -- could be a new lie!).
Look at their pupils too. Un-dialated is a sign of agitation, which could mean they're lying. Also, if they touch their face, often this is a good sign.
Other signs are body language - what's their posture? Defensive with arms crossed?

a lier will say too much or too little about the matter at hand. Giving unnecessary details especially when have plenty of time to make up story points strait to a lier. Be a little meaner acting if people lie to you.

Ask them if they're lying. If they answer "yes", they are either telling the truth in which case they are not lying . . . or they are in fact lying about lying in which case they are both telling the truth and lying . . . of if they say "no" they may be lying about lying in which case they are lying and lying about lying or they may be telling the truth and are actually not lying. Confused?

you have most of it right. when you ask a question and the person doesn't know the answer they look upward while they arer trying to locate the information in their brain.
