They eject both eggs and sperm (microscopic) into the water. They time this so that they all do it at one time by hormones. These spawn clouds then mate (fertilize the eggs) and grow into free floating larva that drift for a while. Eventually they find a place and develop into a clam that you are familiar with.

The second person is absolutely right. The cloud of sperm and eggs create thousands of larvae, which stay in microscopic form for sometimes half a year. This is the period when they are known as zooplankton. Many of them will provide food for other organisms. Those that live and find a place to settle will advance into the next stages of their life cycle. Btw, when they are in their larval forms, they look nothing like the clams we get in our clam chowder!

The answerer's about clams' planktonic larvae are correct...but there is some more interesting information about freshwater clams (very common in streams). Ever thought how they get upstream? They don't exactly swim! Instead the planktonic larval clams (known as glochidia) hitch on to fish gills that naturally swim upstream. When the clam larvae grow to a certain size they drop off. Many of them end up far upstream of where they were first formed in the water column.

No, the pearl is a protective shell that a clam forms around dirt in its shell in order to keep itself from being poked by it.

Clams release eggs and sperm into the water; larvae settle to the bottom and form shells about a day or two later.

i'm not being smug or self riteous with you, but get the hell away from social security its no way to live. any excuse they need to screw you they will. they arent there to help anyone. take any job going. i collapsed on the last building site i was on from exhaustion and ended up in hospital when i returned to work the next day i was paid off, i was an insurance risk. i wasnt an insurance risk when i did the majority of all the hard work. no choice i had to make a fresh claim, i didnt want to but i was refused the dole anyway. apparantly even though i paid taxes for 20 years as has my missus i dont qualify as she works full time. its a bad thing to be in gainful employment. but if your a good person fate can look out for you. luckily i got anothet placement where i can work to my own pace with no hassles. you have to find work now! fuc'k the dole. they done the same to me as they did to you. you find yourself a job it will feel like a ton of worry has been lifted from your shoulders. but you have to find a job no employers gonna come knocking on your door. i hope i'm not being demeaning but you know yourself thats life!
