Nothing new. Unfortunately, the leaders of Iran don't realize that trying to enforce a strict uniformity in your citizens doesn't strengthen a country; rather, it weakens the country.

I wonder what an "un-Islamic" haircut looks like? Or, rather, what kind of haircut is "Islamic", and who decides which hair styles are "Islamic" enough?

What if a Muslim man wanted to go bald, or became bald by natural causes? Is that an "Islamic" hairstyle?

It sounds like the Iranian Government is very aware that the youth of their Country is attracted to the Western style, and they are trying to nip it in the bud. Will they be successful, or will they cause a revolution? I think people, especially young people resent being told how to dress, and behave and eventually will rebel. We can only hope.

Well, all I read was the last paragraph and my first thought was that they'd get along great with some of our Americans (fundies in particular) who think they have the right to tell others how to live. It's ridiculous and ignorant, but it's their country, I guess they can pass whatever laws they find to be necessary to maintain their culture. Doesn't mean I agree with it.

It's simple, they want forced capitulation to strict standards of conformity. Forcing the populous into this type of regimentation helps to limit dissent and uprising. In a word it's totalitarianism for the sake of control, and to cause resentment and hatred of those who practice freedom.

What I get is that anybody can misuse any religion for their own goals. Do we just notice it more when it's a different country or a different religion?

I wouldn't say that article represents the Islamic Quran any more, or less, than the 'Army of God' represents the Christian Bible. Still, isn't the 'Army of God' a frightening bunch?

That the Iranian government has a complete lack of understanding of the US and the west or they just love piling on the propaganda.

WOW AND THEY SAY THAT PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE LIKE THAT. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT NO REVOLTS. THE PROGRESSIVE PEOPLE ARE THE VICTIMS HERE. IF YOU WANT PROGRESS YOU CAN'T DISPLAY IT IN IRAN TIMES ARE CHANGING AND THE ISLAMO FASCIST ARE TAKING OVER. THEY MUST BE STOPPED. THE WOMEN ARE TAKING IT ON THE CHIN HERE. NOT ONLY ARE THEY FORCE TO DRESS A CERTAIN WAY BUT THEY HAVE VERY LITTLE RIGHTS WHEN IT COMES TO ANYTHING ELSE.

I think they lie and keep people ignorant to the West as a way of controlling them. Sort of like convincing everyone that hell exists in order to keep them from doing bad stuff. On the surface it works for what they are trying to accomplish.

It's typical narrow-minded radical Islamic bulls--t. The ole "women should cover up because men can't control themselves" retoric. No surprise here.

I'm with Argle.

Sure, it's an oppressive, fundamentalist regime, but - if the translation is accurate - it sounds a lot like the stuff American "Christian" fundies spout.
