You dump an avalanche of facts on them and they dismiss it as propaganda. To them, even though human causation of global warming remains unproven, you're anti-science if you don't jump on the bandwagon; even though revenue is skyrocketing, the tax cuts were a bad idea; even though the BLS data is clear that everyone has benefited from the strong economy over the last five and twenty five years, they insist not only that "only the rich benefited" but that somehow that came at someone else's expense - - - as if, if my boss came in to my office and gave me a $5K raise, that's 1.6 thousandths of a cent less for everyone else. No amount of Econ 101 can convince them that it isn't a zero sum game, that even if only the already-rich HAD benefited (despite all the data to the contrary), THAT would not be a "bad" thing because it wouldn't have come at anyone's expense.

If the sky needs to be green for a Lib's conclusion to be right, the Lib will insist that the sky is green.

No cory not different people come to different conclusions on the economy. The economy is doing well and so are its participants, at the height of an interest rate cycle, and only a few holdouts who predicted that it wouldn't do well refuse to admit that it is doing well.

We are obstinate because someone has to defend the constitution, as well as counteract the dumbing-down of America that the Right continues to inflict on the nation.

There is as much evidence for human causation of global warming as there is for the origin of species through natural selection.

We're not the ones who are insisting that the War in Iraq is a success, so we have here a case of the pot calling the new tea towel black. But that kind of approach to the truth is consistent with everything that the Neocons have crammed down our throats for the past 25 years.

By the way, if you read the BLS statistics on "distributional measurements," you will find the BLS' findings that apart from the wealthiest 2% of the population, the real, after-tax income of Americans has declined by 5% on average since W took office. However, the top 2% has increased by more than 100%.

I do not bleat like a sheep. Therefore I resist, knowing that when the truth finally comes out, as it always does, there shall result a revolution in America the likes of which we have not seen since the Emancipation of the Slaves.

Couldn't disagree with Coragryph more, except for pumping toxins in the air. Whether you believe man made global warming is fact or fiction, it's always a good idea to conserve resources and minimize pollution.

The economy can be measured by statistical methods, in a variety of ways. Unemployment, wages, GDP, trade balance, inflation, tax revenue, stock market, and god knows how many other ways.

Since 2003, the economy has been ticking in the right direction in numerous indicators. Unemployment down sharply, wages up, market up, inflation low, but increasing lately, GDP up, tax revenues up, etc.

Each of us has our own subjective experience with the economy, based anecdotally on ourselves, our families and our friends and acquaintences. Even certain regions may be doing poorly compared to others. But as a whole, this nation has had a great economy the last 4 years. The problem with a lot of Libs is they can't look past what they see anecdotally.

Most people are obstinate; it is not just a liberal phenomenon.

Human failings are present on both sides of the political aisle.

Case in point, you could have phrased the question in a less hostile and prejudiced manner. Rather than try to bring people together, you tear them apart. The world is not so black in white that everyone is either liberal or conservative, and people are not so predictable that they all act a certain way. However, the more antagonism you send out, the more you will receive.

You will succeed in making liberals more obstinate, and in return, they will antagonize you, making you more stubborn. It's a delightful wheel of ignorance that never ends.

Not everyone, or at least not every region of the country, is benefiting from the current economy.
Times are very hard in the mid-west. Ohio and Michigan are wilting away because of all the industrial jobs leaving both states. A very similar event happened years ago while the oil industry crashed in Texas.
I live in Ohio, and I can tell you times are hard here. Trying to convince anyone from here that the economic times are good would be a hard sell.

I usually blame the government run public education system. Their ONLY job is to educate our children, but kids graduate that can't read their diploma. How do you expect people to be able to grasp basic economics if they can't even make change for a dollar? Seriously, have you ever seen a minimum wage, high school dropout try to make change when their cash register is broken? It's just sad.

I love how idiots try to say facts like 2 + 2 = 4 comes from "right wing" web sites. It just proves the complete failure of government run education.

Sadly, most humans get defensive and angry when their belief system is challenged by the truth. So when you say to little Johnny "2 + 2 = 4", they reply angrily "No it isn't, it's 5, and you only think it's 4 because you listen to Rush Limbaugh". They don't stop and do the math to see they are wrong, they just react with random name calling hatred.

P.S. Poverty will never go away. Humans will never pop out of the womb making $100K. There will always be young, inexperienced, or unskilled people. They must work their way up, like the rest of us.

There seems to be a lot of that going on around here and it isn't just one party or the other. Can't we all just play nice? We might actually find out we all have the same basic needs to be met and we are more alike than we think. Not to mention, we may actually learn something from each other.

Largely because their opponents are so obstinate. The same behavior happens on both sides of the political aisle.

Granted, the sole human causation of global climate change may not have been proven. But the changes to the environment have been, as has the fact that humans are pumping tons of toxins into the air. So, whether problems are solely caused by humans doesn't have anything to do whether we should change our practices.

As far as the economy -- different people come to different conclusions, and lots of people hold to a political line even where there is no rational support for their arguments. Like saying Iraq was at fault for 9/11, or that gays are attempting to destroy the institution of marriage. Both are irrational assertions, just like the one you attribute regarding the economy -- that doesn't stop people from making the assertions.

As for Global Warming, I'm not sure. Fear Maybe ?

Tax cuts during war time is most always a bad idea, the fast growing deficit would be a good point to make about that.

Is that it ? you just had those two examples, right ?

Actually, most economic philosophers agree that in order for there to be an upper class in any society, a certain percentage of that society has to be kept in poverty. The greater the percentage of wealth is controlled by a smaller percentage of people actually drives up the percentage that has to be poor in order to sustain the system. I would have thought that in Econ 101 you would have learned that if your boss gave you $5000 more, that's $5000 that isn't going elsewhere, and if you multiply that by the number of people who already have something who are getting more, you'd see that there are a lot of people who aren't getting anything.

And what statistic can you possibly show to back up your claim that everyone has benefited?
