In your question it doesn't say if you plan to actually wear the lid or if it is for practicing spraying or as a plant pot BUT......If you're buying it for the road then please consider this....A school friend of ours bought a cheap second hand helmet in the late 80's. It looked pretty good and was advertised as 'like new' in the classifieds. He was riding pillion on my other mates 250LC that summer & came off when the bike hit a turning car. He died from severe head trauma and the inquest blamed the helmet which showed signs of previous internal damage. If you can't afford a new simpson - buy the best new lid that you can afford. Yeah simpsons are the best looking helmets about but you may as well be wearing a knotted hanky if it has a hidden past!!!! I wear an open face lid in the summer which I suppose has it's own dangers but it is an Arai freeway so one of the best open face you can buy. What value your head??????????????????????

I was about to tell you never to buy a second-hand helmet, but lots of people have already given you that good advice. Basically - as people above have said - there is no way to tell if it is good or compromised; as someone says above - it is after all an old biker rule - if you have a £10 head, buy a £10 helmet. I guess your head is worth more than £10 to you, so be prepared to pay for a new and good helmet.

Don't buy second hand safety gear for a bike esapecially a helmet. A used one might look good on the outside but the condition of the inside might not be as good, you wouldn't now how it has been treated or if it has been dropped, cracks could accure on the inside that wouldn't been seen. For your own safety buy a new one even though they are expensive but it's worth it

Only a few head lice! Do not buy second hand saftey equiptment. Just drop a helmet once and you compromised its ability to save you in a crash. Helmets do not age very well anyway. New helmet every three or four years. Besides you need one someone else has not sweated in.

When you buy a used helmet look at the condition of the inside padding. A helmet with worn old falling apart inside padding is for all practical purposes junk

what is more important to you, money or life? You have no idea of history of second hand helmet, you can get a brand new FM helmet for less than £50, second hand one could have been dropped or could be expired

You must have a cheap, second-hand head, then? Don't buy used helmets.

All these previous answers are right. Also polycarbonate helmets (I dont know if they are still made) used to be recommended for two years use before binning due to degradation weakening of the plastic. They will be cheap though if still made.

it seems most dont know what they are talking about . the main thing is that it should fit your head and if its been on someone elses then it wont fit you. its not been proven that droping a lid will render it useless and what most dont realise is that you can bang your head more then once as you go down the road so they should take more then one hit. you can have them tested if you drop them to find out if they are still safe. you should never bye a lid online either , you need to make sure it fits as two of the same lids can fit differently.

dont buy a cheap lid either buy a good make that you can depend on. shoei, arai, agv, suomy to name a few.

Be aware of the safety aspects of buying 2nd hand helmets..... you don't know what sort of unseen damage has been done to it.
