Its a fairly new thing that began in Australia in the mid 1990s, and almost all the test nations now do it. Its to emphasise the history of the sport.
When a player is first selected for England , he is awarded a selection number.
Numbers 1 to 11 were the members of the first ever England test team in 1877, and every new player since then has been given the next available number. The newest player, Chris Tremlett , who made his England Test debut at Lords this week is therefore number 637 .
Here is a full list of all the England numbers, up to January of this year :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_English_Test_cricketers
There is a seperate different numbering system for the England one-day squad, because that only dates from the 1970s.

The numbers indicate the the appearance order of a player for the country. For example the Number 601 indicate that he is the 601st player to make test debut for the country.l continuity. The number is in the order a player makes his Test debut. If two or more players make their debut in the same match, they are given numbers alphabetically based on surname. For example, Thomas Armitage is Test player #1 for England. He made his debut in the very first Test Match, against Australia, on March 15, 1877, and was first in alphabetical order amongst that England XI. Chris Tremlett is the most recent debutant for England, making his debut on July 19, 2007 against India. He is Test player #636 for England. These numbers can be found on a player's Test uniform, but it is always in discreet small type on the front, and never displayed prominently.

it basically means how many players have played for england(given test caps).for example kevin pietersen number is 626 so he is the 626th player who have played test cricket for england.same lies for the one day cricket aswell.but that will be much less as the one day game started in 1970's.in one day cricket kevin pietersen's number is 185.hope that helps.
