I have a 9 month old, and we have air conditioning on most nights. I feel like it might be chilly for him, but I'm worried about putting a blanket over him at night - when is it safe to start doing so?

Since you haven't used a blanket yet, it might be better to use one of those "wearable blankets" they look like little sleep sacks that you zip the baby into. They are safer than regular blankets because the baby can't get tangled in it. This might be better for your baby since he's not used to having the blanket.

Here's an example:

I'm not a mom yet (I'm 35 weeks pregnant though), but I have done alot of research on SIDS, etc. because I am worried about the whole blanket thing myself. From what I have read in numerous magazines, websites, etc. is that you can use one right away if you want. The thing to remember is to make sure the bottom of the blanket is tucked under the mattress so it cannot ride up over your baby's face. Also, I don't know if they make them in a size big enough for your baby but did you look into the wearable blankets (they're called sleep sacks)? Good luck with everything!

I used blankets from the beginning. As long as they are big heavy blankets. Something like the receiving blanket when they're really small but once my daughter was about 10 months she had to sleep with one particular blanket that she had grown attached to that is a little heavier.

my baby didn't like to be swaddeled after 2 weeks. i live in california in the valley where it is really really hot so having the AC on i felt like pajamas may be too hot but a thin blanket would be fine. my daughter sleeps with her arms up like as if shes making the "goal" sign so i just tuck it under her sides with her arms over. by the time shes ready for her night time feeding its completely off and at her feet. she sleeps in a bassinet next to me so i really never worried much about it being too early since i could see how she slept and just felt comfortable with it. but i think its generally said when the baby can start to roll over on their own they are just as capable as swatting something out of their face. just do what feels comfortable with you.

Dress him in sleepers if you're concerned..

My son is 4 months and i still swaddle him, at night he works at the blankets and gets unswaddled, but still stays warm.. try that
