Should be listed in your owners manual, along with everything else. Best to look there

I own a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T. The Audi went over to synthetic for their turbo cars. I am not sure what is the recommendation for their V6 and V8 (non turbos).
But no matter what, you SHOULD always use the synthetic oil. Audi engine have been known to fail from sludge build up. Go do Google search on "Audi sludge" and you can scare yourself.
Basically many new engines (including Audi) get too hot for conventional oil. The oil evaporates (or boils or cooks) and becomes thick. At that point the oil become more like thick glue instead of slippery oil (think of what happens when cooking oil is left on frying pan to burn).
It is a cheap insurance for your car. Engine rebuild can cost you somewhere between $4k to $8k (and the engine will never be the same).

As for the grade, it should be 5w30 if I'm not mistake. The last number (30) should be exactly what the manufacturer recommand (no higher and no lower). The first number (5w) should be equal or lower than what the manufacturer recommand.
Good Luck.

It depends on three things: 1 - what the Audi Owner's Manual says on the subject 2 - whether your car follows the flexible or fixed mileage servicing schedule and 3 - the climate in your area. First, readwhat the book says and follow. Second, if thew book is not available, find out about your schedule - the Dealer will help you find that out, it's coded on the sticker in the trunk. Third, consider the climate. General rule: the thinner the oil, the better for the engine. In all and any case, make sure to follow the Audi VW oil specification in the form of 50x.01 (x can be anything from 4 to 7) printed on cans. Go for reputable manufacturers and don't overspend by changing oil more often than requred.

The best for your car would be a synthetic Mobil 1 oil.
It depends where you live also and what season it is; in the winter you will want to put thicker oil so it does not freeze, and in the summer thinner oil.

It should be in the owner's manual, but it definately takes synthetic motor oil, either 5w30 or 10w30. Just go to buy the oil and they will be able to tell you. Get Mobil 1, it't the best.
