I thought my fish is pregnant, can a female fish have what looks like the gravid spot without actually not be pregnant.Or maybe I am inpatient?I've been watching her close for a few weeks and I believe that she is getting fatter and darker.Does anyone have a good picture that I could compare her to? Thanks.

The gestation period is 28 days with any livebearers

Hope that helps

You can never really tell when a platy is going to give birth. The mother fish can practically choose the best time for birth. All you can do is make sure that you are ready and check the bottom of the tank every day.
what you need
1) a hard bodied breeder or dense leafy plants
2)a new, cleaned turkey baster( to transport and feed the tiny fry)
3) baby fish food (store bought or homemade)
Moving the mother into a breeder often scares her and makes her hold off on giving birth. Raise the temperature of the tank a degree or two, sometimes this provokes motherhood.
I recommend that you allow the baby fish to swim freely in the tank. This way the mutated ones will be eaten and the strong healthy ones will live. If you choose not to use a breeder you must have plants for the fry to hide in. Really dense plants with lots of leaves are great, if you can get your hands on java moss--even better!
