I will be moving to a Southern state as my boyfriend is joining the US Coast Guard. I am looking forward to nice people, and warm weather. I am looking to live in a nice place with decent jobs, but my main concern is moving to the right place. I am a "Yankee" Democrat and I am just worried I will move into the wrong place with racists and bigots, and I do not tolerate the N or the F word. We live in a somewhat racist area and want to get away from it. Iam just worried about going from the pan into the fire. We will be stationed on the coast obviously, and want to stay away from hurricane prone areas. We both seem to like Maryland but have never been there to really tell. Any thought? Thanks!

I'm a Yankee in the south, and I kind of know what you mean. What you will find is that racism is no more prevalent here than it is up north, so long as you stay within more urban and culturally established places. All rural areas do not have racism problems, but your odds of running into that in Perry, Florida is much higher than if you are in Tallahassee, which holds the state capitol and more than one university. That is my personal example. Maryland, however, is barely south! If you end up there, you likely won't find any more racism than you will in Chicago or New York.
Hope that helps a little. Have a good move!

I have been north, I grew up in VA, I now live in SC. The reason that I never considered living north of the Mason-Dixon is because the people are too bigoted and ignorant. I do not run into that in the south. Only people who decide to live w/ their heads in the sand and listen to what the media and government decide to tell you think so. The most racist place I've ever been in my life is Boston. The one thing southerners do hate, yankees that think they're better because they're yankees.
Maryland is not the south. However, it is nice. Best seafood in the world.
There is no such thing as a coastal area that is not hurricane prone, not even in New England.

I live in Houston, Texas. It really is a great city with lots to do, and a melting pot for all different races/ethnicities. We are also only about 2 hours away from Austin, Texas, which has a neat nightlife, tons of parks & fun outdoor activities you can do. Great city as well. And we definately have pretty great weather (no snow), it's usually warm year round. Little humid down here though. Hope this helps! Good luck.

I have always heard that Maryland is beautiful, but I wonder, is it considered a "southern state"? The Carolina's coasts are really nice, but of course there will always be the hurricane possibility. I myself am partial to Florida, especially North Fla., but once again, there are hurricanes. Unfortunately, most areas are going to have bigots and racists.

I'm from the south, and let me tell you...good luck. Most southerners are not racist or bigots, but with an attitude like you've got...of zero tolerance, you're in for a long search. You've already said you currently live in a racist place that's not the south, so it goes to prove that it's not cultural, just individual. I don't agree with most "Yankee" democrats, but I'm not a racist either. YOU need to have an open mind also!

I live in Florida, and I hate to tell you this, but some of the worst hurricanes that ever hit the US have hit North of Maryland. Check out the National Hurricane Center site. Maybe you should move to California?

also the houses are very expensive here.
my parents payed more for our three bedroom townhouse then they did for our nice four bedroom house in TN
there is also very nice places to go and sightsee
we used to live in tennessee and it is a nice state, especially up in northern TN
