If I get cancer my insurance company will pay for almost all of the bills, but if I want to stop using tobacco by using Chantix I have to pay for it out of my own pocket. (I did and it works) Seems to me that they'd want you to help you quit than have to pay big bills later on. It's no way to run a busisness.

Good call. Insurance companies could make billions from preventative medicine, due to reducing higher costing post medicine. ie. Lasik eye surgery, nicotine patches.

Chantix is new and has not been put on most insurance companies formularies yet. Medicaid pays for it though, too bad I don't qualify. You are right it works, I have been forking out my $100 a month for it, only complaint I have is that it makes me extremely nauseous unless I eat a good meal before taking it.

Years ago when i was growing up, this was true of the birth control pill. It wasn't covered under insurance, yet if you got pregnant, the pregnancy, birth, etc. was covered. But you're right: The costs on the other end are far more expensive than initially paying for prevention.

Look at it this way, how much would 12 weeks worth of ciggies cost you? Generally insurance doesn't cove medications to prevent illness, only medications to treat illness. It is a weird system.

Good luck on quitting. I shelled out a couple hundred myself on quitting, have never felt better.

It is a business decision on their part. They have to weigh the cost vs the risk of potential costs. What they decided to do will depend entirely on the assumptions behind their calculations.
