I think the biggest ally to the LBGT community is family and friends. The people closest to those in the LBGT community see the everyday struggle for equality and they see the toll it takes on the individual who truly deserves the same rights as everyone else.
I think the biggest obstacle is for the LBGT community is to break the stereotypes that society has long believed. Those stereotypes have a stong hold on the repression of equal rights. It's not fair and it's infuriating for any group of individuals to be held back from basic civil rights based on narrow minded conservatives, especially during this time of supposed "political correctness".
The LBGT community seems to be making powerful strides to overcome adversity. Keep fighting for what's right, equality across the board.

I think the biggest struggle that we face is narrowmindedness.
I think that our biggest allies are the up and coming generations who are beginning to realize that it doesn't matter who you love and that even IF it was a choice (which I don't believe that it is!), it's everyone's right to make their own choice.
I think that the biggest obstacle that we have to overcome is gaining total equality in all aspects of our life--marriage being the most obvious one on the forefront now. But, discrimination of any form against any group is dangerous to all of us.
I think that most people will treat you however you allow them to. If gay/lesbian people keep apologizing for being gay/lesbian or live their lives in the closet, they give the message that we feel ashamed of something. I think that we should become more vocal and more demanding of our politicians to represent us well. We should be out to our neighbors, family and friends and let them put a familiar face on the issue they are discriminating against.
We are our own worst enemy when we choose to live in the closet.
But, that's just my thoughts!

Most important: Equal marriage rights to marry one unrelated person of age of OUR choosing.
There are over 1,000 rights that hang on this one.
Frankly, I can't see what the obstacle is, when the Constitution mandates giving all citizens the same rights. I guess the main thing to overcome is the resident of the White House. :o)

It seems to me that the biggest obstacle is the "is it by birth or by choice" thing.
When other groups wanted their equal rights, it was clear that they were basing it on what they were by birth. Blacks, women, etc. and that since they are what they are by birth, not by choice, anything less than equal rights is discrimination.
I think that until science can absolutely prove that gays are born that way, there will always be a powerful anti-equal rights for gays segment in our society and unfortunately where it counts most - our government.
That doesn't mean that all efforts to obtain equal rights are doomed and useless, it just means that gays have to work at least twice as hard for them, and it may take a lot longer to obtain without that scientific proof for backup.

Wow, that's a mouth full!
Biggest issues are equality, for all citizens, regardless of sex or gender or...Real EQUALITY. Not lip service to gain office or help at fund raisers.
I hate 'ACCEPTANCE' I don't ask for it, I don't need anyone to accept me but me.
Marriage is a hot button topic. We need the rights of marriage. We need Equality.
It all comes back to EQUALITY.
Candidates have agendas and pander to whomever they feel will help them reach their goals. GLBT can be useful to these ends. Sadly.
The only way to overcome the issues faced by any minority group is to never accept anything less then total equality, across the board.
