I am thinking, "One step at a time"

Dozens of gay and lesbian couples lined up to register as domestic partners Monday as a new Washington state law went into effect.

The secretary of state's office registered the first couple shortly after opening its doors at 8 a.m.

It's a good start and I'm optimistic. :)

I try to think of it as progress. Ten years ago, it was unthinkable, and it's certainly better than nothing in terms of both recognition of our value to society and providing real protections for our families. The danger is that many seem to actually believe that it's equivalent to marriage, and that it's available everywhere, so they brand us as whiners and ingrates. Ignorance is bliss and guilt-free, which is why so many people are deliberately ignorant of those issues that don't directly affect them. And until marriage for all is established as a fundamental right, and not subject to the whims of popular opinion, we're one election away from having it all taken away.

Sounds reasonable to me. It's a separation of church and state thing. Let the domestic partnership designation handle the legalities and let the churches handle the religious vows. It seems to be in society's interest overall to encourage committed relationships.

I think it's a cop-out to shut gay people up without giving them proper rights.

But I guess it's better than nothing.

I am from London and so we get proper civil partnerships, and I am always so surprised how far behind America is on this. It needs centralised legislation.

I feel that they too are tax payers and American citizens, and that they should be able to do anything a straight couple can do in this country. If people have a problem w/ this, they should just keep their opinions to themselves, because it isn't any of their business anyways.

Call me pessimistic but I wonder about this. Not so much the benefits but somehow I'm thinking history here, and the dangers of placing your name on a list.. McCarthy, the Nazis, early Christian persecution, I wouldn't let it stop me but I'd be thinking about it, a lot.

I agree. My first thought was it is a step in the right direction, at least.

I think you deserve much more though.
