Remember what Mr. Spock said - "There is an old Vulcan proverb - Only Nixon could go to China."

Nixon used the State Department to foster new diplomatic initiatives, including the recognition of Communist China. This had been talked about for years (the China card); its opposite was the Russian card. Truman formulated the doctrine of containing Communism, which subsequent presidents followed. In Nixon's case this meant invading Cambodia on top of fighting Vietnam, and it meant illegally overthrowing the democratically elected government of
Chile, and supporting the terrorist regime of Augusto Pinochet. Nixon had little interest in Eastern Europe.

What many people forget or don't realize is Nixon was the only V.P. that was extensively trained in foreign policy by his boss Eisenhower. Had it not been for the advent of TV debates the not too charismatic guy may have beet JFK. He did get more popular votes.

He inherited Viet Nam from the democrats with nobody realizing the previous president's wife, LBJ was the majority stockholder in the shipyards with exclusive repair of US and Vietnamese naval vessels.

He wanted the US out of Vietnam. Watergate killed him but WG was a result of the Pentagon Papers. How many readers can relate to that horrific issue when somebody gave the enemy the US strategic plans. But that was when we had Jane and Kerry to massage the enemies needs.

This is a bit off topic, but a lot of the questions & answer choices are to foster a certain mindset in the minds of young people; a subtle brainwashing, for lack of a politically correct term. The student will eventually come to seek the approval of the professors at the university, and doing so, will reject the moral teachings of their parents. We had a saying (in the 60's) that a student will come to school to lose their religion and their virginity. That said..read the books written by Henry Kissinger, foreign policy is a very difficult thing, sometimes it hinges on catering to the personal capricious traits of certain dictators whom the U.S. has to deal with at the time.

Think about it. Nixon ended the war in Vietnam (after first widening it.) He went to Communist China on a visit.
