Tom Cruise has been much more public about his involvement with Scientology. He publicly berated Brooke Shields concerning her use of medication for post-partum depression (they've since made nice), and had a run-in with the popular Matt Lauer. Those incidents fueled an all out anti-Tom fire that seems to have cooled somewhat, however; the controversy has impacted Cruise (his contract with, I believe, a major producer was dropped in the aftermath). In any event, Travolta has always been successful with maintaining a warm and fuzzy persona with the public, all the while keeping his personal family life just that...

Probably because John Travolta is more likable and humble than Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise is a good actor, but at the sametime, he can be such a butt hole and just doesn't know what to say out of his mouth.

People give Tom Cruise a hard time because he is an obnoxious clown. John Travolta is not openly disrespectful of the beliefs of others, so he tends to get the respect he deserves. There is a big difference between the way the two behave themselves. One is a rotten child and the other is a decent adult.

This happens to Cruise because he has made himself the poster child of the so called religion, which is viewed by many as a cult considering you have to pay to join the religion(how messed up is that). This somehow made him think he knew the answer to everything and then proceeded to grand stand and espouse his beliefs and berate people like Brooke Shields for having post partum depression. John Travolta, does not wear his religion on his sleeve and does not try to cram it down other peoples throats unlike Cruise

People give Tom Cruise a hard time about it because he's a fanatic about it. He espouses his beliefs publicly and he insists that they are the only possibility. He derides anyone or anything that is "against" Scientology or its beliefs. Check out his interviews with folks (don't remember if it was Oprah or not) where he says Psychiatry and Psychology are stupid and people who participate in those occupations are charlatans and their patients are just weak and stupid.
John travolta, on the other hand, is far more circumspect about his chosen religion and doesn't give people crap for disagreeing with him. He doesn't call people stupid for believing that Psychiatry and Psychology have something to offer society, and he doesn't act like a baboon on national television. In general, he's a far better spokesperson for Scientology even though he has chosen not to be one at all.

I think Travolta is considered a much serious actor/celebrity in Hollywood because of his constant lifestyle in time. So he is more credible no matter what he intends to do. Cruise instead... well, he's not a good actor, at first... let's face it and that could give him less credits than to Travolta in anything that he does.
Regarding Scientology... well, to me people are toooooooo judgmental, you know, even with Cruise.

Because Tom Cruise is very outspoken about scientology to people who aren't into it. I've never even heard John Travolta say the word scientology.
