Everyone's always saying they want a smaller government--a government that doesn't meddle in people's personal choices. Drinking and driving is a personal choice, and the government has no business devising laws to curb it.

Its only illegal because it could hurt other innocent people. Like children walking down the street. However, I think there should be place people can drink and drive. Something like an landing strip for airplanes. But for cars. With lots of telephone poles and trees so they can crash and kill themselves instead of innocent men and women and our children!!!!!!

Do you wanna get in line for the landing strip drive first?

Drinking and driving is NOT a personal choice. That choice affects the safety and lives of others. More than half of all fatal car accidents in this country are alcohol-related (meaning at least one driving is driving while intoxicated). Making it a crime to drink and drive is a preventative measure. This is one instance where the government should get involved.

It depends on what you think is a better way to punish criminals.

Do you want to punish someone because they MAY cause a problem in the future, because what they are doing increases the risk of an accident?

Or do you want to punish someone (and make it severe) if they DO ACTUALLY cause an accident?

Risk management is a philosophy that has some value, but like anything else can be taken to the extreme.

Making drunk driving illegal is one type of risk management, where the activity itself has little social benefit, and the risk of harm to innocents is fairly high. Other specific regulations may not come out to the same conclusion on the scale.

My neighbor chose to drink and drive, with his daughter in the truck. Went through a stop sign, killed the woman driver, injured her daughter, grandaughter had broken back, collasped lung, broken collarbone.

It is a peersonal choice, and the government better do somehting about it or I will. And trust me, you would rather have the government take care of it.

Ask that of the parents who's daughter was decapitated when the limo they were in was hit by a drunk driver. When the drunk person threatens the lives of innocent people then that person must be stopped. Government is the only agency that has the power to do that.

Axel, loved the Beverly Hills Cop movies. As a fake cop you should support law intended to keep the streets safe.

Loved your other questions too.

Maybe you could be the subject of a thesis for a Psych major.

Drinking and driving kills other people who are innocent victims as the result of the other idiots choice to drink and drive. I only wish that the people who choose to drink and drive would only injure or kill themselves instead of the innocent others on the road.

I disagree. Most personal behaviors affect only the individual, and I agree that those should be nobody else's business. However, those who drink and drive are a high risk to everyone else, not just themselves. For public safety, it's a behavior that should be illegal.

When you drink and drive you endanger the lives of others. That is more than enough reason to outlaw it and throw offenders in jail.
